iTunes video playback lackluster, at best
Alright, I
have to get this off my chest: iTunes 6.0.2 is absolutely terrible at playing video. Whether it's a tiny little 30 MB
file I made of a TV show, or a 1 GB movie, iTunes is sluggish, choppy and it chokes as if it accidentally swallowed a
wishbone. This happens whether I'm playing them in the main window, or a separate one. I don't do full screen, as I
have too many other things I need to get done while enjoying (or trying to) my favorite shows and vidcasts.Granted, my 1.67 GHz 15" PowerBook hi-res with 1.5 GB RAM isn't one of the fastest machines on the planet, but it certainly isn't a Pentium 2 either. Opening these same videos in QuickTime results in smooth, wishbone-free playback, which leads me to wonder: What gives, Apple? Why is your flagship music and video player horribly failing at one of its main purposes in life?
Even if you aren't Apple, feel free to share your thoughts.

I wrote post #54. I did manage to fix my G3 Firewire Powerbook/iTunes Video problem. I used a DELL Inspiron 600m (1.60Ghz processor/ 512mb Ram) laptop. To my surprise, it worked great!!!! Not a single problem what so ever. I couldn't believe it!!!! I also tried the Apple QuickTime Movie Trailers on the same DELL and it worked great. That was a HUGE surprise to me!! I used to be able to look at the Apple QuickTime movies with no problem. Now, all I have is problems with the movies on my G3 Firewire Powerbook. Why? I paid over $3,000 for my Powerbook. The DELL that I used cost my fianc頪ust under $1,200. Why did I buy a Powerbook? This is forcing me to reevaluate my next computer purchase (which will be in the next seven months). DELL, thanks for catching up to Apple (bcause my wallet can sure use a break!) Apple, you just lost a customer (over a $1.99 video)

I've tried for over a week now to watch the video on my G3 Firewire Powerbook and it's pathetic. I start the video, it goes slow, then frame-by-frame and then just plain stops four to ten minutes at a time. All this while the audio keeps going.I can say, without a doubt, that this was my first and last video purchase from iTunes. It would have been nice to know, from iTunes, that iTunes Videos DON'T PLAY WELL ON G3 FIREWIRE POWERBOOKS. From what I've been reading today, iTunes only plays for sure on G-5's or better. iTunes should have a message that says something like "this program won't run on your computer" that comes up automatically whenever you purchase an iTunes video..

Quicktime 7 itself is buggy as hell on Windows. More often than not, when I quit the player the thing just crashes. Yay.
I am a windows user and I'm having the same problem with 6.2. I don't know what the deal is.
The other problem I have is that quicktime installs itself into the system tray. When I go to options and tell it not to do that, it goes away. But when I restart windows, it's there again.
On my 1GHz G4 PowerBook, iTunes video playback is woeful. I end up telling iTunes to show the file in the Finder and I play it back in QT7 without fault. Really annoying.
January 27 2006 at 11:27 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGuys, I have the solution to this. I used to have this problem, and it drove me crazy so I did a full system reinstall. That definitely fixed ALL problems I was having with video playback. I investigated further to see if I could isolate the problem... and I *DID*. It turns out it most definitely is a plugin issue. I have identified several plugins this has a problem with, but the most signifcant is flip4mac. Especially their latest version, it just brings quicktime to its knees. I know it's all to easy to blame apple, but try it for yourself. Do a full backup and reinstall or just remove all your 3rd party plugins, and videos will work like 'butter.' Basically, screw microsoft and their crappy wma and wmv formats!!
for anyone interested, I have a 1.5Ghz powerbook G4 with 1.25Gb ram. Never had a single problem with *any* video (and I have about 100) once I cleared out the bad plugins! Someone please tell me if you can recreate this problem even with plugins removed.
Does anyone else have a problem playing a video within iTunes? My videos work fine a separate window, but when I play them in iTunes all I get is the default artwork. Anyone else?
January 26 2006 at 11:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI noticed problems when I switched to Quicktime 7. That seems to be the issue for me.
And as for the comment on Flip4Mac, it crashes my browser each time I try to play a .wmv file. I've uninstalled it.
I tracked the video playing problem in iTunes down to a conflicting iTunes Visual Plug In and an iTunes audio plug-In.
As soon as I removed them everything was great.
