Silly Sunday Survey: Intel Macs, buy now or wait?
A new Silly Sunday Survey is way overdue, so dear readers, we have one for your edification. Are you going to be buying (or have you already bought) one of the first generation Intel Macs (i.e. the MacBook Pro or the Duo Core iMacs)?
I tend to avoid first revs of any Apple products, especially since I ordered a Cube seconds after Steve announced them and did the same thing for the Titanium Powerbooks, but that's just me. Sound off in the comments!

wait until the pro apps come out...or until at least Photoshop becomes universal....until then...my PowerMac G5 will definitely suffice...

I walked out of the keynote and placed an order online (took 10 mins to get the order thru!). My only doubt is whether I should wait for a 12" model, as I'm replacing a 12" RevA that I love to death...

ordered a MBP on the day they came out...my 667 Ti is dying a slow death, and I've been waiting since June for Intels to come out to upgrade...as for those people waiting for pro apps - there was no need for Apple to have them ready at Macworld, because they were releasing to consumer machine...I'm sure they will be shipping with or just immediatly after the first of the "Pro" Intel machines

I ordered my MacBook Pro about a week after the announcement.
My current PowerBook is over three years old. I wanted to buy a PowerBook right before Jobs announced the switch to Intel. So then I decided to wait a little more and order the new Intel "PowerBook".
I am happy with my decision. After I saw the first iMac tests I got really happy with my decision. The new MacBook Pro will be a huge step from the current PowerBook line in terms of performance. The case design has not changed much, so that should be pretty stable. The only thing that is new is the Intel board and chip inside. The Intel iMacs seem pretty stable, I think the MacBook Pro will be just as great.
I cannot wait to get my hands on the MacBook Pro. Two more weeks, or so and it will be here.

If I could afford it, I'd order one now, so it's probably just as well that I can't; the whole x.0 problem. On the other hand, my desktop G4 is getting pretty ancient, and sure could use replacing...

If I could I would probely order a Macbook pro after the first post release Review, but I have to wait until June so I will be forced to consider all other intel macs that come out, I would only get a Laptop though

It is very hard to resist buying every new mac thing that comes out. I'm not really even looking into Mactels until they have significant edge over PowerPC versions. My 1.67 gHz Powerbook is still screamin'

I didn't wait for MacBook, even though I'd trolled the MacRumors/Apple Insider/MacDailyNews, etc, sites all last year when they all screamed that the PowerBooks must be updated "this Tuesday."
In November I needed a new lappie for travelling for work, and my old Sony Viao just wasn't cutting it. So I Switched and got my 12" Pbook 1.5; love it. Glad that, so far, my PBook hasn't been replaced with a newer 12" model.

First gen products from Apple are usually good. However, this is a new platform for Apple - so I am holding off until I get to see the next gen. By that time, all Pro apps have been ported and optimized and most of my apps might be Universal already. :)
Besides, I want a 12"/13" MacBook Pro.

Is the intel iMac truly "rev A" in the typical mac-usage of the word? Sure, all the intel-ness is brand new and "rev A" but the rest of the components: the power supply, pci-ex, case, cooling, etc. are technically "rev d". This is essentially the same exact iMac that came out 3 months ago. How is the iSight/G5-iMac a rev C while the intel iMac is a rev A when they have virtually IDENTICAL hardware and design?
So, what I'm saying is that the usual "rev A" trappings don't really hold for the iMac. Rev A problems are usually some random, hardware-based flaw like cooling problems or hinge problems or logic board problems or whatever (you true "rev A" iMac people who bought in September '04 know what I'm talking about). However, Apple has had 4 generations to perfect the current iMac hardware design. The only thing that is "unproven" is the intel chips themselves. And while possible, I think it's rather unlikely that these new machines will have isolated processor failures.
I'm calling the intel iMacs "Rev AD"... 'A' for the intel, 'D' for everything else. I'm actually very happy that the intel iMacs use the previous design because a) it reduces the possibility of the usual rev A flaws that would be even more damning in this processor transition phase, and b) the iSight-iMac design is damn nice, regardless of processor. I felt a sense of security in that familiar iMac design and ordered one as soon as they were announced (I've been wanting an iMac for quite a while). Even If you insist that the new intel iMac is rev A, i'd say it's one of the safest rev A bets in Apple history because so much of the hardware and design has already been proven.

I'm hoping I can hold off at least until Adobe releases a Universal Binary update to their suite, but may not be able to as my PBG4 1ghz is starting to exhibit signs of an impending logic board failure.

I'm buying a. iMac core duo in about 2 weeks. It'll be my first mac since gradeschool. I'm really really looking forward to getting this machine. i don't use pro aps or anything like that. iLife '06 is more than enough for me. The only decision I have left is to get a .mac account or not. 100 bucks a year is not cheap.

Just ordered the intel iMac this afternoon, 20" with beefier memory and video card. Been thinking about abandoning Dell/Windows for a while and the time has finally come. A little leery about the newness of the setup, but I'm not getting any younger.

Placed an order for a Mac Book Pro last week. My first Mac. My current computer (a 800MHz Sony Vaio PCG-FX190) has lasted me over five years, and I expect the same quality from Apple...here's hoping! I got 2 gigs of RAM on the MBP...so it should be a huge leap in performance.
