Powerbook vs. Thinkpad

David Parmet has written an amusing piece for Apple Matters lamenting his wife's recent ThinkPad purchase. Now, we Mac folks have got it good with Powerbooks and MacBooks, but I must say that I find it unfortunate that David had to pick on a ThinkPad.

Are they sexy? Well, not really but they are solid machines, and the best Windows laptops you can buy (for business use, which is what I use mine for). If you have to get a Windows laptop, get a ThinkPad even though it will show finger prints. But let us not forget that it wasn't so long ago that Powerbooks were black.

Now, I know we are all dyed in the wool Mac users, but if you had to get a PC laptop, what would you get?

ACER 8200... Its interior are way better than Macbook's, as its monitor, it's cheaper, and sooner or later it will run OSX ;)

The MacBook pro will run Vista. I'll take that one.

I'm all for Clevo, the source of many brands.
In Belgium they call it pointersystems of Qforce.
In Holland promedion.
Cheap and good quality

I'm surprised not to see any ASUS fans here.
ASUS is pretty much identical to the powerbooks in many ways. I'd take one.

ACER. Don't know much about the windows-computers these days, but I know for sure a nice 1500 dollar acer would be my bet.

The ThinkPad Tablets.

I am an Apple Employee, and often do demos at a store in NYC that has both PCs and Macs. Most of the time I only have eyes for Power/i/MacBook Pros, but I have to say this little do-dad was JUST what this Fine arts major wants. The convenience of the 12" Powerbook, with the twist-round awesome-ness of a Touchscreen and stylus interface, but without sacrificing a full keyboard... Until Apple makes something like this, this will, in my opinion be the coolest small form factor laptop out there...

I would go with a ThinkPad.

I tried Compaq three years back, and though I really liked the performance of the Athlon in it and the internals were great, the construction was lacking (one screw dislodged and warped a small circle into the bottom, and a hinge was defective since manufacture causing the plastic to give in under pressure finally *wobbly*, up side is I disassembled it and learned a good deal about laptop construction/got rid of the bland silver paint and switched to a better black.) Until this time I had only used personally-built or IBM systems and regretted switching out of that tradition. The previous IBMs always came with just the right software and were solid machines. Of course now I'm pining for a MacBook, but I'm still tempted by the plain and solid appearance of the ThinkPad. (the MacBook has a nice set of hardware and that certainly tips the scales a good deal) The one thing I like about the Compaq I have now is the port cover, which hides/protects the array of plugs and pits that collect dust and dirt all too quick.

Back in my wintel days, I used an NEC laptop. It was a pretty decent laptop. I remember it lasted quite a while. I'd probably get one of them again. I also remember hearing good things about Toshiba laptops.

I'm in the UK and have always found the Toshiba Laptops to be hard wearing, reliable and the support is excellent if they do break.
