SubEthaEdit hits 2.3

SubEthaEdit, the favorite collaborative text editor of many TUAWers, has just been revved to 2.3. The biggest change in this version is that the licensing structure has changed. There are no longer any free license of SubEthaEdit. The Coding Monkeys are trying to earn a living coding cool apps for the Mac, and to do that they... need to make money.

Check out this post about SubEthaEdit sales that gives you an insider look into how sales are going, and what the guys behind the program want to accomplish.

As far as alternatives go, my current favorite is Smultron, http://smultron.sourceforge.net/, it's free-as-in-speech and works fantastically well, especially for being such a young product. I replaced SubEthaEdit with it quite some time back, and now I'm very glad that I did.

As far as biblio software, http://bibdesk.sourceforge.net/ is also very young but looks very promising, no word integration though.

I paid for SubEthaEdit even before the "watermark" was added; definitely worth it. I know TextMate gets all the good press, but whatever they've done to make it incompatible with input methods makes it completely unusable. And the CodingMonkeys dudes are cool. I'm sure there will be some outcry about the lack of a free license, but I hope it all works out for them, and I encourage folks who have been using it to pay for it.

So what are the free alternatives? I don't need collaborative features unless they work with Windows equivalent apps, but I do need a programmers editor (working mostly with C).

Also, is there any good bibliography software on the Mac? Seen endnote and bookends but didn't like either. I could really use something that works with word and latex/bibtex both :(
