VersionTracker Threatened by Macrovision Over Mac-the-Ripper Links

Über-blog Boing Boing is reporting today that VersionTracker.com has been contacted by lawyers representing Macrovision (who makes copy protection technologies found in many commercial DVD's) threatening them with legal action unless they remove download links to Mac the Ripper, software used to rip a DVD to your Mac's HD.

"We have been contacted by Macrovision, who claims this violates their property and are threatening to sue us if we don't remove the links to it. We are checking with our legal advisors to find out what our options are. -VersionTracker Editors"

It is in fact Macrovision that should be sued. They are infringeing my 'Fair Use Rights'. I would love them to sue me as I will continue to make make backup copies of every CD & DVD I have purchased.

This isn't the first time trigger happy Macrovision has resorted to legal threats. Our company InstallAware received a letter from them a couple weeks ago (http://www.installaware.com/threat), alleging that we copied their website and are confusing users with our product names and site content. Macrovision now owns InstallShield and I think they feel threatened by our new setup tool, InstallAware. We are offering a better product at blockbuster prices - they probably don't think they can compete on even ground, so they sent us the letter.

Its interesting how Macrovision resorts to legal threats instead of improving their products and services. We have many users who complain about InstallShield, its reliability, how hard it is to use, etc. And what does Macrovision choose to do? Invest money in legal battles instead of servicing their customers and improving their products. So what did we do? We put up a poll on our site (http://www.installaware.com/installaware-are-you-confused.asp) wherein 98% of our site visitors said they were not confused. Enough said...we'll always use our time and money to make our products and services better.

I will not renew my pro subscription if they give in. I'll make sure all my friends don't renew them as well. End of story.

Bittorrent, etc. will still be mechanisms to release apps like this. Have to agree with Jesse on this one, I hope VersionTracker doesn't give in. If they do, I think I'll host the thing somewhere else.

While I don't don't agree with pirating movies... consumers SHOULD be able to make back-up copies of DVDs that they've bought, for PERSONAL use.

It's ridiculous to be expected to shell out another $35 to $50 dollars on a box set if one of the fragile discs gets scratched or lost... which it will if you have children.
