Apple buys data center for ~$50 million

With all the hub-bub about the fabled special event, we just got around to posting the news that Apple recently bought a giant data center in Newark, California for an estimated $45 to $50 million dollars. This 107,000 foot center was originally intended for MCI Worldcom back in 2001, but was never occupied. The report of the sale in the San Jose Business Journal indicates that the facility is "impressively equipped," and that  data centers like this usually house "computing, data-storage and networking equipment assisting in Web-based services and transactions. The most elaborate 'Tier IV' centers, such as the Newark facility, have the highest levels of redundancy and security. . ."

Far be it for me to show any interest in rumors. (I can be as stoic as Scott.) But if you're interested, the rumor sites are speculating about what Apple plans to do with this juicy acquisition. . . .

I believe that this new datacenter facility has nothing to do with the iTMS. On he contrary, I would see more a dedicated first facility for an MVNO a.k.a Mobile Virtual Network Operator supporting (web-based) services embedded into the iPhone (yeah right iMobile if you wish). I furthermore think that the Apple MVNO might come as a counterattack to Virgin Mobile, hence opening a serious competition between the two brands. Therefore, no geeky underlying stuff, just pure business.

Room for movies! Or, better yet, a free music store for bands trying to get heard.

I'm thinking they just need to expand the .Mac and iTMS in both bandwidth and storage space beyond what their current facilities can offer, and/or at cheaper rates. I don't know were they house their .mac and iTMS stuff now, but if it's in a commercial datacenter, it's going to be costing them a fortune and the growth is going to be limited due to the building also housing other customers.

If (big IF) apple plans to do a movie on demand type of service, it would make sense that the new Mac Mini does not have Tivo-esque functions. Their business model would want us all to download or stream movies. Too problems, however, are downlaod times and HD.
