Mike Wendland's video review of the iPod HiFi

Mike Wendland, the technology columnist for the Detroit Free Press, has posted his review of the iPod HiFi. He likes it, and he wants one of his very own.

However, what is more interesting than his column is his brief video review of the unit. You get a taste of what it sounds like (though of course that is thrown off by the video compression), and you get it see it in action.

Another Sherlock Holmes observation:

The person demo'ing the Apple Remote pressed the "menu" button a couple of times, as if that was the way to change songs etc.

From my play with it in at Apple retailer, the menu button actually does nothing at all on the iPod Hi-Fi, only the "circle" buttons are used...

The setup the retailer had was actually quite good: they had several popular models of external speakers, including the Bose Sounddock and Altec Lansing iM7, and let you put your own iPod in each of them to play.

And despite Leo Laporte's claims, I actually played a recording of Liszt's Piano adaptation of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and it sounded extremely good on the Hi-Fi, the best of them all with the volume turned up as loud as a real piano. The iM7 is not a better speaker as Leo claims - I think they must have given him one for free in the past. Anyway, everyone knows the ONLY way to listen to piano music is underneath a real piano, ala Mozart in Amadeus.

Also, arkowi, you tell it like it is!

Mr. brian Whitney, my and John Hopper's comments were not in reference to the linked review, but to Scott's post here at TUAW, saying that:

"You get a taste of what it sounds like (though of course that is thrown off by the video compression)"

However, I am humbled by not identifying their clever red cosmetic powder. Hats off, sir.

Well well well, Sherlock Holmes has nothing on you first few posters...

Unless you're listening to your computer through the iPod Hifi right now, you're not going to hear the same quality it's producing. I think the only thing they were trying to convey in the review was what he SAID ABOUT THE ITEM. Knowing you can't really expect to convey 100% of the audio quality on an internet video, they used their artistic lisence and dubbed over the song playing.

I'm glad you guys have the IQ to be able to see through their clever rouge.

Wha! You mean someone who actually used it and got to hear it actually liked it! Bah! I'll trust the opinions of people who have never seen or heard it who told me it was a ripoff 2 seconds after it came out!

... and if it were real audio, I wonder how they got it to keep playing even with the iPod removed?...

Wow that mans voice was annoying, maybe because Im at home sick right now I get annoyed easily but I couldn't wait for that to be over. It sounded like he was talking to 4 year olds.

And even if it were real audio, you'd have not only audio compression, but two other layers to provide degradation and/or deviation from the actual acoustics: the microphone picking up the sound, and your computer speakers reproducing it.

That's not the real audio... its overlaid. If it was real, it would get louder when the camera moved in.
