Irish schools choose Macs for film program

Ah, the luck of the Irish. It seems that the Irish Ministry of Education and science has pilot program that brought the use of film into the curriculum of primary schools. The youngsters would create films using Apple gear, and in the process learn many valuable lessons (I assume). The program has been so successful that it is now going to be adopted across the entire country of Ireland, meaning Macs in every primary school.

Ahh, if only I were an Irish primary school goer (I wish I had a nickel for every time I've said that!).

Have any of you FCP editors ever used anything other than FCP or AVID?

It stuns me that people think FCP is a worthwhile editor. It's so slow! I love macs, don't get me wrong, but I cannot figure out why people like editing on FCP or use Motion, or DVD Studio Pro. I've worked with these suites, as well as Avid, Premiere, Video Toaster, Discreet Edit, Speed Razor, and quite a few others. FCP is competent enough to be useable, but I find it to be poorly designed for the system's needs. I mean, a powerbook with a GB of Ram has to render audio for basic playback? WTF? And all the preview files that suck up HDD space are not managed efficiently. If you render a clip, and make a change, then re-render, you've got 2 preview files now instead of 1. FCP won't ever address that old file again. So it sits there. Taking up HDD space.

Okay, I'm sure I angered someone, but I've edited on everything out there. I've got my preferences to be sure, but I just don't understand why people are drawn to FCP. Is it because it's mac? Why not Avid? Why not work on a PC for video, and use your mac for basic work stuff?

Pedantic note: It's not called the 'Ministry' of Education, it's the Department of Education and Science.

Looks like things have changed since I was a youngster. The Irish educational system has always particularly emphasised the arts - it's great to see an element brought in that straddles the arts/science divide so well.

No shit, Mac are better for Video. Even the fucking Mac bashers know/admit that. So who cares if some school is using them? Nobody, that is who.

Hi, yea I submitted this story to digg, and I can confirm that we dont talk like leprechauns and we don't say top 'o the morning to ya! Ireland has one of the fastest growing economies in the world, with around 4,000,000 people north and south.
I was very surprised when I saw this on apple.com/ie. I hit the RSS button and there it was! I am not too fond of the current government, but I will say this took me by surprise. It will be one of the positive things I can remember now from this government when the next one takes over.
I only takes one apple user with some pull within the government to get the ball roolling on this idea! I can tell you how great this is, and how happy I am to see the Irish innovate in education. COOL!

Orange County Public Schools (Orlando, Florida) implements Macs for our Tv Production Classes in High School...a few schools have already taken the liberty to upgrade to MacBook Pros because some freshman abuse the old iBooks..

My school's film program is Macintosh. Every time there is an FCP update, we upgrade. It's awesome.
