Is the eMac's successor on the horizon?
I like the
eMac. We have several at my day job, and they're solid and reliable (and low cost, to boot). Alas, they drifted quietly
out of existence. Have we heard the last of the low cost, all-in-one Mac?The folks at Mac OS Rumors think not. They suggest that a machine with a 19", 16:10 wide screen CRT and a Celeron Intel processor is in the works, ready to take over the vacancy created by the eMac. The next question is, would these be education-only, or would the general public be able to purchase one? Time will tell.

At a Genius Bar at the Apple Store, I asked about CRT vs. LCD, and they confirmed what I suspected. Even the latest generation LCD is not as bright as a flat screen CRT (and possibly not as sharp as well). For that reason, as well as affordability, and its popularity in the Education field, Apple should bring back the eMac.
I have looked at an iMac and an eMac side-by-side, and the emac is brighter generally, and does better with DVDs. For speed and light weight, the iMac is great. For screen brightness, the emac easily wins.

Yea! go emacs!
i have a 1.25 ghz emac from december 04
its getting really slow...
but i do miss the emacs in the kids section at the store!
I cant imagine that they would re-release the eMac, even at an educational standpoint.
With the goals that the educations is trying to advocate these days the ibook mobile learning labs seem to be a more effcient and cost conscience decision.

Even, LCD's are so cheap these days they could offer something like a mac mini+screen or a cord solo version of the imac for a fairly cheap price.
I think they should put an LCD inside the eMac case. The case is durable and that would be a leg up for educational institutions interested in buying machines like that that are a little more durable than the typical thin external LCD screens. Basically just put the guts of a Mac Mini inside the eMac case. Heck, it would lower Apple's manufacturing costs too because it would be a larger order of LCDs overall. Gotta think about economies-of-scale.

I don't think it will be called the eMac, but instead I think Apple will bring out another low price/ education based all in one. It won't be CRT, but it won't be like the slim new iMacs. It might just be somewhere in between. The reason for this is that there is not, at the moment an intel based education desktop. The ibook is is in the bullpen and ready to go into intel.
BTW: I'de love a intel eMac for quick OS X to Windows work. I'd ue it to dual boot.
I see them in the stores in Japan. brand new ones, I never wanted one, so I never inquired about them. But they are on display at Yodobashi Camera, and Bic Camera in Osaka.

March 28 2006 at 12:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUmm, when was the last time MOSR accurately predicted anything? That site seems like it's run by a couple of pubescent fanboys who concoct ideas on their weekly sleep-over!
That said, RIP eMac, you were great when released (the cheapest G4 of it's day!), but are slow, heavy and noisy today, the Mac mini is a worthy successor.
I'm a student who has been known to buy things from apple. Yes, they *do* check educational status when you try to buy from the educatuional store. There's a discount, apart from anything else.
