30" Cinema Displays receive a boost

It's not anything too major, but still notable. Eagle-eyed shoppers at the online Apple Store may have noticed a change in the 30" Cinema Display's specs. Specifically, brightness has been boosted to 400 cd/2 (from 270 cd/m2). Also, the contrast ratio is now 700:1 (from 400:1). The price remains the same, which is somewhere in the "you-can-get-four minis-instead" range (that's $2499US).

Oddly enough, these specs match exactly those of the 30" Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP. Do what you will with that information.

The back of the Dell 3007WFP is fine. It would be nice if the Dell also had Firewire, but I'm happy with the built-in flash card readers. Also, for those living in Canada, dell.ca had the 30" on sale for $1499 last week, with free shipping and a 3-year warranty. That's less than US$1300... how many Minis is that again? :)

The Dell comes with something very important that the Apple one doesn't come with.. Height adjustment.. So if you want to adjust height on the Apple, you have to pony up another 300 bucks on a monitor arm..

I take your point, totally (And agree, really) - But have you seen the back of the Dell? It isnt pretty...
Unfortunately I have no use for either (Well Budget) lil old 17 incher does me just fine (on a student's budget!)

And yeah, those colour calibration tools are fantastic, very, very good. Dad leant me one from work - very effective.

#3 (Chris):

The Dell because it's cheaper and consists of the exact same components? (nice 3-year replacement plan, too)

I kid, a little, but the Dell 30"s are pretty nice looking and I personally prefer dark bezels on my displays if I can get them, at $300 cheaper (half a mac mini) for the same thing, meh... I'd rather use the money saved to buy something else, like a nice calibration tool for that fancy new display...

I hadn't seen this before, so not sure if someone else has highlighted it but looks like AAPL are trying to avoid another class action suit, they announced a software update for the iPod(R) nano and fifth generation iPod, allowing customers to easily set their own personal maximum volume limit. The software update also gives parents the ability to set a maximum volume limit on their child's iPod and lock it with a combination code

Actually, the price did go down. It used to cost the same as five minis.

At least the Apple product is on par now - But it looks a hell of a lot better than the Dell. I know which I'd buy.

#1: Er, last time I checked this was a blog, not a hardcore news site... So shh!
