iSync 2.2
Reader Johnny W. sent this in yesterday, but it took me a while
to verify: iSync 2.2 is rolled into the 10.4.6 update, and
it's quite nice. A while back I had my Motorola V60 working with iSync. See, last year when I got my "new" phone, I bought a $60 cable on ebay for $20 (along with a car and wall charger). This bundle included Moto's phone tools, so I could sync with my PC. About 8 reboots later, it worked! I somehow managed to get it to work with iSync, even if iSync really didn't know what phone it was... but only a few months later, an update killed the connection. The V60 was never listed on the compatible phones chart, and I figured, given the life of phones, it was all over. Yet Apple's official list of iSync-compatible devices has really expanded with 2.2. And there's my lowly V60, along with the PEBL. One big downside appears to be Palm support. Anything with the PalmOne brand is still fine. Anything older now needs the Mark/Space app for Palm to sync. That's so lame I can't even talk about it. What am I supposed to do with my WristPDA now?

One small problem with iSync 2.2 -- it appears to have broken synchronization with Sony Ericsson K700i phones! I know that happened for me, and lots of other folks in the Apple iSync discussion boards. And there are also reports of other phone with broken synchronization. Yikes!
Also, I've been having a lot of problems with .Mac synching over the past few days -- not sure if these two problems are related, but they are a pain!

Missing Sync 5 is one of the best damn packages out there for a PalmOS user. Seamless syncing between the Palm and Address Book, iCal, iTunes, iPhoto, card mounting, file syncing; hell, it does it all, and does it fast and well (as of the recent version 5.1).
Why should Apple be tasked with picking up the pieces when *Palm* was the one who abandoned the platform?

thats me! TUAW forgot to mention that N40 phones now work with iSync! Like the Nokia 6230 is finally compatible!

Joshua: because the broken synchronization componentry was in the Apple iSync conduit, not the Palm conduits. And Palm didn't abandon the platform - they public announced that they were moving from HotSync to SyncML, which is iSync's native language. If anything, they were increasing their support of the platform (no more funky conduits necessary).

i concur with Joshua. Missing Sync is a fantastic piece of software and well worth the money spent.

Regardless of who's to blame for Palm sync issues, I would recommend you give The Missing Sync 5 a try. It's functionally superior to the Palm hookup in just about every respect. I *could* use the Palm conduit (I've got a V710), but I happily ditched the Palm desktop manager & assorted crud for Missing Sync when they went to version 5.
So perhaps this is just Apple acknowledging that there's a better product out there. Of course it'd nice if they bought a blanket license for us, but then who'd pay for continued development? Personally, I'll be happy to send money to Mark/Space once in a while to keep them coding.
Cheers

As usual, not a single phone that is available from Sprint is on the list.

im pretty happy with the new version as it got rid of my nasty n70 hack and provides the proper sync interface... bummer for the k700 folks, my k700 is in the bottom draw and will probably stay there now

What is it with these American mobile phone network operators? Sprint, Verizon etc. Are you restricted to just using the phones they offer on their network?
Here in the UK you can buy pretty much any phone you want, on contract, on pre-pay or simply handset only, stick any network operators SIM card in it and off you go.
No limits on handset choice, or crippled features... and a shedload of iSync supported phones to choose from.

Interesting about your experience with your Motorola v60. I got an iMac G5 in December of 2004, and I've always had my v60 in iSync (with nice little image of the phone and everything).

2.2 is a bust for those of us who are Verizon customers using the Razr VC3. Brian Toth created a nice installer so that iSync would support the VC3 in syncing with both Address Book and iCal. iSync now supports the VC3, but only with Address Book; iCal support is now broken. Good news for those who didn't find Brian's awesome hack; bad news for the rest of us who did! It may be worth rolling back to 2.1 and applying Brian's patch until the next version of iSync appears...

I've got a Treo 600 and have done the update to 10.4.6 and don't seem to have any problems syncing.

Yes, really! johnny won is right. How could you have missed this? The big deal here is Nokia Series 40 phones are supported now!
Of course the K700i bug is unfortunate, but I would think that they'll hopefully fix that... My T630 works just fine, like before.

The BEST phone for using with iSync is the Sony Ericsson Z520(a). It syncs perfectly with iCal and Address Book, and the Device Browser works great with Bluetooth.
I highly recommend this phone. It's great! The Cingular version is the z520a, and other services simply the z520.

Thanks for posting this! I've been waiting for support for the Nokia 6230i for a while, and I wouldn't have noticed the update had you not pointed it out.

My Sony Ericsson p800 is not working since the iSync update. Symptons: it always wants to install the iSync client on phone again. Are your symptons similar?

Hello,
I have just installed isync on my Sony Ericsson 910a, well, in fact I haven't. It keeps coming up with KERN-EXEC, Reason 3, when it is 75% through. Any idea what this means. I still have my data but everytime I try to install the file on my phone I get the same message. I guess my version of isync is corrupted. Can anyone send me a copy?
Thank you. David
