Victor has a post over at DownloadSquad with some handy
tips for those of you running Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp. I like the idea of using the Windows .Mac tool to
actually get some value out of my .Mac account for a change. One observation that I'd like to make: whoever spends
money on Microsoft Office for Windows is a fool. Open Office on XP runs like a charm; it's much better than the OS X
version. The seasoned Windows users amongst you will most likely find Victor's introductory post on this topic a bit too basic, but he's sure to crank out more in the future, and as always feel free to weigh in with your own ideas in the comments to either this post or Victor's.

And anyone who buys Office 2004 for Mac is a dumba**, because it's a POS compared to Office 2003 for Windows?

You know, there are a lot of people who must use Office (as opposed to Open Office) to maintain compatibility with other people's files. Yes, OO can open and save Office files, but not without losing some formating in many cases.

is there a universal binary office equivalent program for the mac? All I need is to type the odd letter, and some very simple spreadsheets.
Does the mac come with a basic word processor as standard, like MS Wordpad?
I use openoffice but can't find any info on it being UB at the moment. I get my MBP next wednesday.

OpenOffice is not UB yet, but it runs on my MacBook (in limited capacity). I think anything that's java-related doesn't work. Don't depend on it solving all your problems.
Thankfully, OS X comes with TextEdit, which is pretty well comparable to WordPad (not Notepad) on Windows. It allows you to use standard fonts and has formatting, etc. No spreadsheets or macros or anything, but it'll get you through the occassional letter.
I'm keeping my eyes out for a UB version of NeoOffice, the OpenOffice which doesn't rely on X11. Seems cleaner to me. People seem to like it more. Opinions?
