BMW updates its iPod car kit
Looks
like I have to trade in my BMW M5 already (and by "BMW M5," I mean "Saturn VUE"). Earlier this week
at the 2006 New York Auto Show, BMW revealed an update to their iPod
integration kit. According to Left Lane
News, you will be able to access your iPods' playlists, artists, albums, podcasts, and browse genres all from the
car's built-in display. The kit will work with all iPods with a dock connector and will be available with the 3 Series,
5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series and the M5, starting with the 2007 model year. This is really good news because, you know,
owning a BMW isn't nice enough.[Via MacNN]

Two things:
1. They've implied that they will no longer offer CD changers, since this will be standard on all BMWs.
2. So why doesn't it say "iPod" in the iDrive menu, and "Browse by Title" rather than CD1? Just a better hack.
That's pretty cool. Glad these guys finally get it. I can't stand that 6 playlist/disc method of iPod integration.
Of course if VW ever gets that Gypsy system going for real it will be hard to beat.

After owning three BMW's in a row; I've learned that BMW reliability = Windows 95
I switched; bought a horse, learned to yodel.
Hmm, I wonder whether the Mini's iPod kit will also be updated... I know the Mini shares a fair bit of BMW's electronics (as it's made by BMW, of course)... I'm about to buy a Cooper S, so it'd be good if it does.

My ipod is the glovebox and my X3 has no way to showing me what's playing or what's on. You have to navigate through your songs using numbers, which is basically very frustrating. Managing your playlists is also annoying, as with the current system you can only have 5 playlists, or use the sixth changer button to listen to the whole ipod. The only way I could keep up with recent downloads was build in a playlist of the most recent additions to itunes. It's never easy to just find the one song you want to hear. Glad to hear this...
