Sneak a peek at Omniweb 5.5

Omni has let slip some tidbits about the forthcoming (in private beta) version of Omniweb (5.5 for those keeping track). This version will using Apple's Webkit, feature some Aperture influenced menus, and a host of other things. It'll be Universal as well, as fear not Intel Mac users.

omniweb gives you tab sized tabs (they are not all Screen Thumbnails, I almost doubt anyone that uses OmniWeb uses the screen shot tab preference, unless they are trying to find that link by its looks)

Where it has the others beat is, you can see more than 13 tabs at a time, and even sort them, and close any of them, can't close the 'off the horizontal tab bar' tabs of the other browsers, without bring up that tab to the front.

Oh, and workspaces is pretty nice too, I imagine there are several ways to make that productive.

Y'know, for some people there's no sense in paying for the browser. For me, OmniWeb's features (Graphical Tabs window, Workspaces, and Ad Blocking/Site Specific settings) are well worth the price.

Sure, I can cobble together a "mostly" equivalent, or possibly for some people, superior setup in Firefox, but the fact is, they're not designed to work together, and it shows, just as it shows that Firefox is not written with the Mac OS in mind.

Don't get me wrong, I like FireFox, and love the cross-platform nature of it, but it does mean that you get a less "refined" experience than something like OmniWeb, where it's all designed to work together.

yea i can't believe they don't let you use "traditional" tabs and forces you to use the visual tabs. that's silly. it should be an option.

and yea, its no faster than any other browser. not only that but on a powerbook, using the two-finger scrolling on the trackpad, its definitely not as smooth as safari. i mean, yea, safari has a one-up on any other os x browser but can't other browsers make two-finger scrolling as smooth as on safari? or is there a setting somewhere that allows better two-finger trackpad scrolling?

(opera does it better than the others but its still too quick.. safari is just the right speed)

Looks cool, but I'm sold on Firefox themes and extensions. :)

Omni Web is worth paying for it; it has very flexible and powerfull security settings, which Safari does not have; you may disable or anable cookies for specific sites in Omni; I like it.

warrenpeace,

I prefer the way omniweb looks compared to safari but depending on what I'm doing I switch between the two although for now Omni is my browser of choice. Now granted it doens't have the powerful option of adding pith helmet as of yet but it suits my purpose.

I just can't wait till they release it.

Will they give the option to use a traditional tab bar? The one they use now it's a pain in small screens.

I'm surprised they continue to work on this. Who pays for a browser, or would want to use this when there is Firefox, Camino and Safari available? I've tried OmniWeb before and it's not faster. The interface isn't any better and I can't remember one feature that I'd switch for. It's just forgettable. Am I missing something?

It does look good. I only hope it performs way better than Safari.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but isn't the "Aperture-influenced menu" there simply the Webkit debugger? I vaguely remember a post about it a while back...
