ifoAppleStore reports that Apple has started using new boxes for retail versions of OS X (as seen above in this picture taken by ifoApple). The new box is very similar to the iLife '06 and .mac packaging. I, for one, applaud Apple for using smaller packing since I just toss the boxes (and that can't be good for the environment).

About bloody time, I never could understand why any software company used big boxes. Did they honestly think people would be impressed, think it was better value, contained more?

Those are some great boxes! Hopefully I'll be able to snap up some shots when I go to the Apple store this weekend.

Lately, I've been getting MS software in DVD size boxes.
Not sure if this is only used for business purchases.
I think the typical DVD box is the perfect container for software and the accompanying paperwork.

The reason the boxes used to be bigger was to prevent shoplifting. These boxes are just perfect for thieves now.

Well, it helps the environment on being able to ship more in the same sized container. More sustainable.

First of all, don't throw away sexy things like that.
Secondly, I think a large purchase like that should require a large package, but that's just me.

I, for one, think people should stop saying that.
You applaud Apple. You, for one, sounds really stupid when you applaud apple.
As for little boxes, one thing I can see as a problem is that little boxes are easier to steal. When I bought iLife, it was in a little box, inside of this big plastic thing, so it would be impossible to open and difficult to hide.

You should be recycling and not tossing the box.

Actually, big boxes is more a marketing thing than a shoplifting thing. It comes from manufacturers wishing to literally push competing product off the shelf, given limited retail space.
As Apple product in most cases is going to be next to other Apple ware, on dedicated shelfspace, this artifact from the ugly side of marketing is less necessary.
Also, it might ease the Sierra Clubs gripes if apple IS more sensible about packaging. But it isn't Apples faults the boxes are big, it is the last 60 years of retailing.
