Kim replaced the firmware on his iPod with that of RockBox, which is an alternate
OS (basically) for the iPod, and tells us
about the experience. It allows you to tweak a number of settings and even gives the iPod new features (such as support
for Ogg files). Now, it isn't as pretty as Apple's version, and the iTunes integration isn't there, but if you are an
iPod user who has install Linux on their iPods, I bet RockBox is right up your alley.Cnet on Rockbox

It's also worth noting that Rockbox isn't an "alternative OS... for the iPod" it's an opensource firmware (OS) project which originated for the Archos players and which now works on some iRiver and iAudio players as well as on the iPod.
It is fantastic though. I use it on my iRiver player and the features it adds are fantastic. If anyone has an iPod OR non-iPod player then it's worth checking it out.

Been using rockbox on my iriver H120 for a long time and it is amazingly good now. I havn't tried the iPod port with my nano yet though since I really don't need the extra features for what I use the nano for

Silviu, can you explain how you got it to utilize the itunesdb? After reading the cnet bit I installed the 5/2/06 build, but can't seem to find any options to have it use the itunesdb. In the meantime
