Widget Watch: miniMail

Today's widget is a no-frills Dashboard widget that gets the job done. miniMail by Duhsoft allows you to very quickly compose text email messages and send them off from the Dashboard. No configuration or set up required. I used it to send a few test messages to my various accounts using my .Mac address as the sender and it worked fine. It seems like a nice way to quickly send a short message when you don't feel like launching your email client. Check it out.

Hey, I am the developer at Duhsoft. Regarding the proposed security issue, although the emails from miniMail are sent through our server, I can guarantee that we have no way to view them. The only time that there is even a record of an email being sent is when there is a mistake involving either the To or From address entered. This mistake shows up at the server's default email address like any error message that you receive when you enter an incorrect To address in another mail client. Furthermore the error messages are instantly deleted, so there is really nothing to worry about.

I'll second maxo on the security issue.
I have had a quick look at minimail javascript code and what it does is forward all your mail content to http://www.duhsoft.com which will then send it to the final destination.
In short : by using minimail, you are letting duhsoft reading your mails.
This is really a sad practice, their disclaimer doesn't even warn people of this fact.
Avoid it at all costs.

miniMail is a security disaster. It doesn't uses YOUR email account. Instead you send email via third party server.

It'd be better if I didn't have to fill in "From" all the time.

I think it is a good idea to quit any application you don't need now and do your thing. I'm not alone:

(...) you could just just Quit Mail.app for a few hours and, uh, just go work.

Good points, all. I have Mail.app opened all the time as well. I wrote the first comment but now think there's something wrong with me. :)

That said; #2, you need something like Dashboard Starter, which keeps the dashboard primed and ready to go.

Who doesn't keep Mail opened at all times?

This raises an interesting question: does anyone NOT keep their mail client running at all times? Everyone in my family has it set to open on start up. These days, I'd be interested in knowing who doesn't and why.
