AppleInsider posts MacBook pictures

Those rumormongers over at AppleInsider headed to their local Apple store and snapped a few photos of the new MacBook (in this case they manhandled a black one). The most interesting picture of the bunch, to me, is above. Look at that new keyboard. Swanky.
Head on over and check out the rest of the pictures.

Ugh! I dig the color scheme, but those keys look painful -- like something you'd find on a cheap calculator.

That keyboard looks like my old Intellivision Computer Module's keyboard.
I have to think that wide interkey gap could have been better used for bigger keys.

I think the keyboard looks beautiful. Will have to check out the feel though.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who looks at that keyboard with a raised eyebrow. Though, the photo may not do the keyboard justice.

Is that mighty mouse technology, or did they revert to a 1-button mouse again?

Is it just be or does it make one think immediately of the old IBM PCjr keyboard.

I don't know if this is true or what they were going for, but it looks like there's less chance of things falling between the keys. As a current iBook owner, this happens to me a lot when I use it outside, because of all that stupid 'nature.'

Revert to a one button mouse? Their laptops have always had one button.
As for the gap between the keys, looking at my desktop keyboard here there is probably more of a gap between the actual striking surfaces of these keys, so I don't think that would be a problem. It looks like it might be more durable too, though I would have to see one for real to judge that.

as 8. said, taking a look at my keyboard (on an iBook G4, 12") the keys only look jammed together, the actual usable surface on top of the keys (minus the 3mm gradient) look identically sized to those on the MacBook.
as for making the keys bigger... hum. my old, old iBook's keyboard was a right old mess at the end 3-4 years in. due to dust, hair... lunch getting in between the keys, dropping down and never coming out :D looks like we won't have that problem with the MacBook.
where's the RAM? Under the battery like the MacBook Pro. Oh, and the speakers... hmm, investigation time.
i still won't touch a MacBook until I get the option to take that glossy screen away ;-(

The keyboard font's been changed. It's no longer Univers Condensed Oblique. It might be Myriad; I can't tell for certain.

Some great snaps Matt ;)
1. How do you find the keyboard?
2. How do you find the magnetic latch?
3. How do you find the glossy display?
IRL.

Thank god for the keyboard change, in my opinion it could only get better from the current iBook's torturous keyslab.

Looks like it doesn't have a "Del" key for windows Ctrl-Alt-Del to logon using bootcamp :)

So why did such a major revision to an important product not get a media event?

#12, the font is still the same. Maybe that white-on-black keyboard action mesmerized you!! It got me too. I had to take a second look :p

I just got back from the Apple Store where I played around with the MacBook for a good 20 minutes.
- I'm not sure how I feel about the screen. With the lighting in the store, it was distracting seeing my face in the screen. However, it seems like color representation is much better (maybe due to the brightness).
- The keyboard threw me until I stopped looking at it. It feels the same if you're a touch typist. The action isn't quite as snappy as my PB G4, but better than the current iBook for sure. The big thing for me is that it doesn't touch the screen when the lid is closed.
- Sound is definitely improved over the iBook. It was hard to hear it's full volume of course, but sounds much louder.
- Played back the 720p X-Men trailer with no problems at all. Case was warm obviously, but not as hot as I expected.
- The "latch" is very nice. The lid just opens without any latching mechanism. Similar to the old clamshell iBooks.

Okay, so I tried out the Black and White MacBooks and I have some conclusions:
1. Glossy display is beautiful. The screen is a bit smaller than my 14 inch, but the widescreen ratio makes up for it.
2. The keyboard is just fine. Gets taking used to, but like any laptop, it's just a matter of how you use it.
3. The black casing is a magnet for smudges. Looks slick, but not worth the extra dough.
I must obtain one.
