I can't burn music cd's in iTunes after this update!!! argh apple behave!

determined by examining certain files in the SuperDrive FW Update application
package.
This update didnt do anything for me, 1.5gb 15" powerbook. Downloaded the update and im still only burning at 2x, I have only managed to find 2 brands of DVD that will burn at 4x in the year and a half I've owned this machine.
I've always found apple to be innovators in some areas yet way way behind in others.
For some reason, the software update made me download this superdrive update thrice. Isnt that weird?
June 01 2006 at 11:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi remember the same super drive issues everyone is talking about here. i can't believe i've forgotten it, but that's what apple wanted. they never addressed the issue despite countless reports by customers and postings on their own discussion boards of the problem. the drive wouldn't burn at the advertised speed, and even the media apple suggested to try and didn't burn at the correct speed, including apple's OWN DVD-R discs.
this is actually much worse than overheating MBP's because it was falsely advertised that the superdrive would burn at a certain speed whereas the MBP was never advertised to run cool.
so now they're trying to address the issue a year or so later? ridiculous.
What about the 12" PowerBook G4 1.33 GHz? I'm having the same problem, and being able to burn at 4x would be nice...
June 01 2006 at 10:40 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThey "forgot" to update the crippled UJ-825 drives used in the 1.5 GHz 17" PowerBooks. These drives were marketed as 4x but will only burn in 2x, even with premium media. And yes, the drives were +/- compatible too.
June 01 2006 at 9:18 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI installed the firmware through the Apple Software Update tool and upon restarting my computer got stuck.
It's a 12" PowerBook 1.5GHz. I had just rebooted the computer, after installing the QT 7.1.1 update. I re-ran the SW, it popped the Firmware update, I clicked install, it downloaded and asked for a reboot. I clicked yes, it powered down, then up, I heard the chime, and saw the white screen with the apple and the spinning thingy at the bottom -- the usual. Then it switched to a light blue screen, completely blank, and it's been there for 15 min.
Could this be because of peripherals connected to the system? I have the following devices connected to the computer: (1) an external fireware drive plugged in, which has a bootable clone of my old Panther system (now I run Tiger), but it would only boot from there if I hold the Option key and select it. (2) an external monitor connected to my miniDV port. (3) a USB mouse. (4) an Ethernet cable.
In the meantime I unplugged the monitor, and the ethernet. The rest is still plugged in.
I could use any help or comments! The machine is still stuck with the light blue screen. Should I hold the power button to power it down and unplug the external firewire drive? Thanks!
This is only for the SuperDrive-based PowerPC Macs that supported DVD+/-R/RW. Models earlier than the ones above supported only DVD-R (and not +R).
Apple was shamefully one of the last companies to start shipping multi-format DVD burners. +/- combo burners had been standard in PCs for almost a year before Apple finally got around to including them.
