Apple posts 'Mac at Work' site
So much for those "Apple isn't interested in the science/business/pro sector" theories. Behold, Mac at Work, a new promotional site from Apple with information, case studies, online seminars and real world event listings for just about every interest and sector besides consumers. Just look at the first section, Science, with a brief case example of UC Irvine's "HIPerWall", a 200-megapixel (yes, 200) display built from fifty 30-inch Apple Cinema Displays driven by twenty-five PowerMac G5s (I wonder if their interns sneak in at night to load up World of Warcraft). Other notable case studies include an OB-GYN whose office is 100% Mac OS X, a business learning to use podcasts and even a section just for the IT Pros (though I'm not sure if that section is entirely new). It's nice to see Apple pimping their products to people who are in the market for more than just an iPod. Here's hoping they deliver the Intel-based pro goods (Mac Pros, Xserves) in August to really get the ball rolling on this push into the professional world of computing.
[thanks Kevin!]

Just great! Another site with the nearly impossible to read light-grey-on-white/grey background. If I ever meet the dumb-ass web designer that came up with that one I'm going to slap him silly.

To #3 (and kinda off-topic): I dunno that Nintendo would say they don't have an obvious target market. Right now there market is everyone who doesn't play video games. It's kinda the same deal as Apple, really -- everybody who doesn't have a Mac is on their list.
Nintendo should send out some early versions of this new console so they can build a page of "all the great things you can do with your Wii."
...
Or maybe not.
Anyone notice on the student page it says:
"
On your lap. In your dorm room.
Organize your class notes and your music. Select models now feature a superfast dual-core Intel engine, a built-in iSight camera, and Front Row software.
"
Note the on your lap.
I happened to refresh the Apple site just as this page was added, and it distorted the top title bar. Any page under the apple menu was messed up at the top. It took them more than an hour to actually fix it.

Mac: "Hello, I'm a Mac."
PC: "And I'm a PC. You know, we use a lot of the same types of programs."
Mac: "Yeah, like Microsoft Office."
PC: "But we retain a lot of what makes us 'us.'"
Mac: "You should see what this guy does with a spreadsheet! It's insane!"
PC: "Oh shucks!"
Mac: "Yeah, and he knows I'm better at 'life' stuff like music, pictures, movies - stuff like that..."
PC: "Whoa, whoa, whoa - what do you mean exactly mean by 'better?'"
Mac: "By better, I mean making a website or photo book is easier for me..."
Hmmmm. You might be partially right. Music, pictures, movies, publishing vanity sites, making photo books - that's pretty much what I've seen Macs being used for in the business environment.
The rest of us have to actually work.
to #3. Yeah, i used to go to NC State. Its nice having all the macs that they do around th campus. The main reason I think, is because of some of their upper lever IT people at the school are die-hard mac users. They have pretty much their own team of IT, promotional, and user-group facilitators that keep the mac presence on that campus alive. In the bookstore, now, they sell more apple computers than anything else, along with a slew of other apple stuff (ipods, really cheap pro software, etc). A lot of the labs, even outside the medical dept, are mac only or have an equal amount of macs as dells. But ya gotta keep in mind that the university is also pretty well known for its design school, which operates on the "you-dont-gotta-mac?-well-get-out-till-you-find-a-way-to-get-one-or-be-ridiculed-into-oblivion" mentality.
even though theyre far from being mostly mac, its a welcome environment for apple stuff at that school. and thats a step in the right direction

However, see companies like Jiffy Lube and Merry Maids for other companies that fill a niche for things people Don't Like to Do.
IT support is one of those, & companies like mine just handle it for you. People like to have someone they can both Pay and Blame as needed.

I recently traveled with a lab supplies salesman around NC State University for a school assignment, and a lot of those labs were on Macs. This was DNA/RNA type stuff. Also my wife works in an estrogen receptor lab and a lot of the stuff there is done on a mac.
Of course they want to expand their business in that direction. Nintendo is about the only company I've ever seen claim they didn't want an obvious target market. And I'm sure they would take hardcore gamers if they could get them.
Fifty 30" displays?!?!? Do you think they could spare one? (for me!)
