Office:Mac Student edition for $99

My friend Chris sent me some info from a Microsoft e-mail, offering Office:Mac Student and Teacher edition for $99 ($149 minus a $50 mail-in rebate). The deal runs from June 13th to September 12th and applies to any purchase (retail or online) of the Student/Teacher version of Office:Mac. If you're headed to school or have a loved one that is, better jump on this deal -- compared to the "Standard" version's $400 price tag, this seems like a steal.

Quick Question

Sorry for the simple question, but is there a difference between the standard Office and student/edu version (aside from the price)?

Can anyone say Open Office? I got through my entire Computer Science 101 class which was basically "How to use Microsoft Office" all with Open Office. When I had to use Access, I just remote desktop'd to specific machines my campus has for that purpose.

Most students out there need Office for small things that Open Office can do. If you have a legitimate need for the features in Microsoft's Office, then go ahead, give them 100 dollars.

There are free alternatives....

Damn! My older sister is going away to college, and my parents just bought her a 15" 2.16GHz MacBook Pro with Office 2004 Student/Teacher Edition. If only we had waited one day!

It's a bargain if you ARE a legitimate student/teacher, but otherwise it's just a 'steal'. I can never understand why people get excited about cheap student/teacher deals if they don't actually qualify under the licence terms -- if they breach the licence terms they're effectively unlicensed anyway. I suppose for many people it's a feeling of having done 'more or less the right thing' and having a serial number that actually works without issues.

This isn't indicating anything in particular even know something may be just over the hill.

Microsoft has done this every year during the summer and at popular school shopping times. They also have a $99 deal at the apple store every once in a while in august.
