Ubuntu is a Linux distro (that's distribution to you, n00b) that is almost easy enough for none techs to run on their desktops, but it isn't quite there yet. That's not enough to stop plenty of people from downloading and installing this most excellent OS on their machines (and I count myself amongst that number). What if you love OS X's looks, but don't like the closed nature of Apple's software (I'm looking at you, Mark Pilgrim)? Why not make Ubuntu look like OS X? Lauri Taimila has a guide that can get you started on that.

It doesn't feel like OS X, just because it looks like it... ;-)

This is more appropriate for tuuw.com isn't it?

Perhaps I just have higher standards, but the Ubuntu makeover looks like lipstick on a pig to me. Just because you apply the same icons and wallpaper doesn't make Linux look/act/behave/feel/ or otherwise perforum like OSX. Just as taking the floor mats and upholstery from a Porsche and sticking in my Ford Ranger doesn't make it a luxury class vehicle.
Linux still looks like crap. I wouldn't even consider using it or the inferior designed open-source consumers apps that runs on it.

I think a default look of ubuntu 6.06 is very fine
and we are waiting for the art update (soon) to correct some glitch and bad icons.
not very ubuntu news, but some people are recreating the os X dock with the whole new Opengl-X-cairo-accelerated (mostly as "quartz extreme" of osx ) stuff
it will not be a part of Gnome/Ubuntu official interface but it's nice way to stress the new possibility of linux desktop and see where it needs tuning and bugfixes.
(and yes, the "zoom dock" effect is a very demanding one, )
impressive works indeed.

the "inferior" designed opensource ("consumer" or not) applications are in os X
webkit ? yup ! Khtml
bind, apache, php, ruby, bash terminal and so on
I couldn't stress enough of course applications as Adium (libgaim) or Colloquy for example.
don't be bad, Linux or opensource or ubuntu IS NOT A THREAT to Apple or Os X or your Way of Computing!
your digital life is SAFE.
don't panic

to put osx lipstick on ubuntu is a shame. it removes new and fine artwork made for the Human theme and the Tango project.

What would be cool though is if they baked this style (along with that Linux Airport Extreme driver) into the Live CD version (PowerPC and maybe a "Mac" x86 version) and distribute that for Mac users that need to pop into linux for one reason or another.
Sign me up for a copy of that!

Mike,
What is wrong with webkit, bind, apache, php, ruby, bash and Adium?

Nothing. I really don't know where your response is coming from. I didn't mention anything was wrong with those. In fact I wasn't even in their neighborhood! The reason I like to have a live CD hanging around is to do things, in a quick fix fashion, that OS X won't let me do because Linux is more open. For instance: Linux lets me easily change my MAC address; OS X does not.
Nothing is wrong with those things you listed, I use them everyday...and, if for some reason I or someone did have a problem with those apps, a Live CD certainly wouldn't be the solution. However for those of us that need to jump into a pure Linux environment for a rare occasion I would much rather look at a Mac themed GUI and have Mac drivers at the ready so my experience is as smooth as possible.

Ubuntu is a great OS, I prefer Mac OS for ease of use and features, but Ubuntu on a PPC, Intel or AMD machine is something I prefer over Windows.

OS X lets you change your MAC address just as easily as a Linux install.
It's even the same command. Get your facts straight.

Mike,
I think Chris was referring to the "michel" right above you. Funny you were right next to each other.

Too bad the article is incomplete! I've gone through all of the steps, but how to configure the top-panel (background-image) is missing, as are some other pointers (desktop font used).
The author himself seems to be using a modified orange Ubuntu-theme himself now...

The thing that is wrong with this article is that the link to Mark Pilgrim's site is much more interesting than anything else in the post. Someone here should go read it and do a post about that. Mark's a smart dude, and he brings up a lot of interesting points.
