SoonR client for the Mac

SoonR allows you to connect to your computer (PC or Mac) and look at files, emails, and appointments via a cell phone that can connect to the web. Today SoonR has released a beta of their client for OS X. The coolest thing about this client, in my opinion, is that you can do a Spotlight search on your Mac at home via your cell phone.

I'm not sure how useful this will be, but it is very cool. Basic Soonr accounts are free, though upgrading to a premium account will cost ya (a premium account includes backups, access to host computers even when they are off, and cheap international calling).

First, I am with SoonR. It is very revealing to see the reaction to the EULA. We have worked very closely with the privacy community to be sure that we tell you everything that we are doing. The fact is that it is impossible to move information from a computer to a phone without making the data live outside of your computer for a few moments. No matter how little we move or where it is stored (temporarily or permanently depending on your preference) we had to tell you that it will be moved.

By the same token, the fact that we will send you updates about SoonR via email and tell you of issues, etc. means that we have to send you email. I hope this is not considered SPAM. Again, our privacy reviewers indicated that if we are going to send ANYTHING, that we had to tell you up front. So we did that.

If anyone has major privacy concerns, please ping us directly. We will review your concern with our privacy consultants and get their advice. We are dedicated to making SoonR a secure service.

We did take venture money after creating SoonR on our own dime for over a year. The fact is that it is expensive to maintain a web service that manages tens of millions of requests without some kind of outside investment. In order to grow the service and to make it more robust and secure, we took some investment capital.

If you have ever read the prospectus of a company, they always have to tell you everything that could possibly go wrong. It's required by law. We are trying to adhere to the same types of rules for privacy. It is our intention to lead the industry in good privacy practices.

Read the license agreement before installing this software! There are major privacy concerns and the fact that the company is financed by venture capital means they will sell your personal data to the highest bidder. The functionality looks good but the price (in loss of privacy) is too high.

Actually, the coolest thing about this is the fact that you can route phone calls from your cell phone through Skype running on your system. I've only played with this a little but it seems to work as expected.

If this ends up working well, it'll mean cheap or free long distance on the cell, which rocks!

are you charged for the data on your cell phone bill? I suppose it would be the same as browsing charges?

I skipped the ULA so if I get spammed I guess it's my fault. but i did get this to work and i think it's very very handy.

I don't know... tried to install it but when it asked me to set up an account so that the client can upload anything from my computer.. well... I rolled back.

Checked the licence agreement, they basically say they are allowed to transfer and store any information plus they are allowed to send me "product emails" twice a week. No thanks.

The product is a good idea but I'd prefer to connect directly.
