iPod Updater 2006-06-28 is available
Hot on the heels of iTunes 6.0.5, Apple has released iPod Updater 2006-06-28. According to Apple, this update:"...includes iPod Software 1.1.2 for iPod, iPod Software 1.2 for iPod nano, and iPod Software 1.1.4 for iPod shuffle. iPod Updater 2006-06-28 contains the same software versions as iPod Updater 2006-03-23 for all other iPod models."
Specifically, the update offers Nike + iPod support for iPod nano, a volume limit setting for the iPod shuffle and various bug fixes. The fact that Apple specifically states that the Nike + support is for the nano makes me wonder if that functionality won't make its way to other iPods.

I'm expecting that someone out there is going to figure out how to take the iPod Nano Nike update and apply it to other iPods, like the 5G. Any bets on how long it takes? I say 2 weeks from today.

i was told that nike+ was not going to be available on other ipods. i'm not sure if the little transmitter attachment will fit on other models.

Why would you want that function with a 5G hard drive based iPod

The Nike + iPod page on Apple's site says it requires an iPod nano, and doesn't list any other models.

I think Apple only wants to have the nano be nike compadible because it is a solid state player and the others are hard drived based which would skip after a while of running. Probally to aviod another class action lawsuit.

Keeping the Nike + only with the nano also offers a strong unique feature over the regular iPod. It helps differentiate their lines of iPods. And unless you have some kind of clip for you regular iPod its a pain in the butt to job or workout with b/c it bangs all over the place.

check it out by myself. I have ipod video, ipod nano, and shuffle. Nike + ipod is only shown on ipod nano when you go to setting > main menu. ipod video doesn't show up even it is updated to 1.1.2. ipod shuffle has new feature when you open preferences. it has now volume limit.

It wouldn't made sense to have the Nike+iPod on any other model since you are not advised to run with a HD iPod, it is considered abuse by Apple. It is safe to run with a nano though, of course. (The flash HD)

I've been running with Ipod's (with harddrive) for 3 years. No problems whatsoever. Only a couple of times it shut down cause of the vibrations. I really hope they will include the 5G Video !!!

What about those of us who walk with an ipod?
I'd like to know how far I walked.
I can only imagine how many iPod videos would have to be replaced if they allowed it.

Humph. Just got a 5G, and after Googling what I thought was a problem, turns out Apple "turned off" the option to hold down Menu to turn the backlight on. I was half-hoping the next update would bring that feature back. Wrong again.
As an owner of a 4G, that feature was invaluable. I wish it was possible now without having to roll back the firmware. I like turning the backlight off completely to save battery power, and prefer having the backlight on only when necessary when switching playlists/settings/etc. Why was this feature removed in the first place?
Stooopid!

1. There is no reason why this can't be applied to all ipods, I've always ran with my 5g and had NO problems. It's not as fragile as people think. Apple's own website states all of their ipods are designed to not skip if you're excersizing with them.
2. It is not going to be ported through some third-party hack. At least I highly doubt it. It's hard enough getting anything else to run on the ipod (like linux). It would take months of reverse-engineering.
3. A third-party hack would be shut down by apple sooooo fast.

Typically Apple does not offer new features to the old iPods. They would rather you just replace your iPod.
Case in point. All iPods since the Nano was introduced almost a year ago (and about 2 updates ago) have been able to display song lyrics. This feature has not been added to any older iPods. Too bad, since my mini is perfect except for this feature.

I was wondering if anybody else with an Apple iPod Video 30Gb was having problems with getting the computer and iTunes to recognize the iPod. Besides that problem my iPod has been frozen for the past 2 months, even after I've let the battery die out. Any suggestions on what I could/should do? I'm at the point where I want to smash the bloody thing, but know that I would lose my warranty in doing so.

Beware. I was having no luck getting my 1GB shuffle to connect to my windows XP SP2 machines, so I downloaded the newest updater.
It just hangs at the first screen and makes my whole computer slow. No matter what I try (restarting, plugging the ipod in immediately, later, restarting with it plugged in, killing ipod processes etc.) nothing helps.
I've had it with Apple and shitty Itunes (this is the second ipod that I've had and I had many connectivity problems with the first too). Time to look for some competition that will just let me transfer mp3s back and forth like I can with a normal USB storage stick.
My advice if you're thinking about buying an ipod, DON'T. Sacrifice the cool design and buy something where form follows function instead

I updated my 20GB iPod with 06 06 28 update and immediately after I have been experiencing extreme difficulties with my iPod. It skips forward and freezes repeatedly. I have reset to factory settings at least 5 times, let the iPod battery run out, etc. I may be drawing odd conclusions, but it only seems to freeze up on mp3 files that I have purchased and downloaded from allofmp3.com. It doesn't happen with the protected AAC files. Could it be that iTunes/mac is that clever? Any suggestions? I am also about to throw the bloody thing against the wall...but I'm addicted to it and want to figure out how to fix it.

Its stupid to throw your ipod just for that. I never bought any of the songs I have. I have those songs from, limewire, kazaa, Imesh, bitlord, bitcomet, napster, etc. since 1999 and no problem with that. Even I have original DVd's and illegal Dvd's in my iPod and nothing. So don't throw your iPod to your wall and give it to me.
