Safari's market share on the rise

Safari's market share has been slowly climbing the charts over the last couple of years, and depending on which statistics you google, it has now reached an all-time high of 3.19%, up from 1.93% from June 2005. MacNN interestingly points out that, in a way, this statistic could also be viewed as a (very unofficial) barometer for general Mac usage, since Safari is one of the few Mac-only browsers (though I bet many Mac users ride the Firefox wave as well).

Either way, this should be great news for Safari-using web surfers and web designers alike, as the so-called web design 'standards' have yet another browser to get customized and tweaked for.

"God I hate Safari ... how is it gaining market share? It does some things well, but man it sucks compared to IE for the PC. I'm not talking about security so don't jump on THAT bandwagon."

LOL, there are a lot more problems with IE other than security..

Safari all the way.

Bookmark management seems easier, checking history, searching bookmarks and history, drag dropping, all just seem easier.

It's a Mac specific program, where as good as it is, Firefox is a "generic" program that happens to run on the Mac.

I keep the Firefox icon next to it in the Dock, but unless I need a really special extension or a site needs a certain browser, I'm very happy with Safari.

Samfish: Safari has had tabs since its second BETA release. I think that's like 3.5 years or more. 1.0 had tabs from the get go.

AND, it does have the drop down of recently visited sites in the address bar. Are you using like Beta 0.00001 or something?

Also, Safari can be extended tremendously extentended with plug ins like Saft, Pithelmet and others. I'm still using 10.4.6, but the new version of Safari in 10.4.7 is also supposed to speed up browsing and switches between tabs, which is good because I keep a lot of tabs open.

Firefox is great when you need the extensibility, but I agree with others: I would use it more if were cleaned up to Mac standards. I am enjoying Flock so far, and I am going to try the new Opera. But for most of my browsing, Safari is awesome, and I also forked over the $10 for Saft, which was well worth the money.

I agree though that the upgrade for Safari is a pain in the butt (Saft upgrade is also a pain). I am pretty anal about upgrading (backing up and cleaning out all my hacked stuff first for a cleaner install) so I haven't been able to try the new version yet just because I don't have time to go through the upgrade

I'm thinking that Apple should change the safari icon to the spinning beach ball. It seems more indicative of what the application actually does.

Meh...give Safari tabs, a drop down of recently visited/typed in pages and something more than google extensions and I'd switch to Safari in a heart beat.

I like safari, but there are a few minor issues I don't like (clicking anywhere on the address bar does not select the address. click the favicon instead. its a pain for me) and keyboard extentions (in FF, cmd+return, cmd+shift+return and cmd+shift when working with the address bar).

Safari certainly isnt bad in my eyes because of this, but I just like Firefox more. And I love firefox because its the SAME when Im on windows or linux.

I have to admit though, safari is WAY faster
