Uncle Walt says run to get an iPod + Nike Sport Kit

Walt Mossberg, the elder statesman of tech journalism, continues the good press for the iPod + Nike Sport Kit. He, and Katherine Boehret, both gave the gizmo a whirl during their normal running/walking routines and felt their workouts transformed from solitary drudgery to running with a training (a disembodied trainer, but a trainer nonetheless).

They both wish it included a heart monitor, and that it was a little easier to use it with non-Nike shoes, but give it high marks for doing what it is billed to do.

From what I recall the 4g and Mini were billed as having 25-30 minutes of shock protection so you could work out with them they'd skip a little then they would be good for another 25-30 minutes.
Come on geeks, how many people with older iPods actually can run for more than 30 minutes? (Just Kidding) but seriously, people who walk don't need the same type of protection that runners would need. Another scenario would be if I ran on a treadmill and put the device in the drink holder instead of on my person. I would say with the exception of marketing reasons I don't see any reason not to allow the kit to work on hd based iPods.

Future Talk:
What I want to know is how long before the iPod becomes the new Digital Hub but this time it will manage our our personal network. We've got accelerometer how about heart rate, gps, or other sensors. Sold in a kit form similar to the Nike+ kit, with one sensor for all, and eventually a built in sensor.

Yea, as if all the 5G owners wouldnt be pissed if Apple would tell them to go running with they're HD's and they broke...
If you can't uderstand the logic of Apple not doing this with the HD-based iPods then there really is no pleasing you. Let someone crack it though, and you can do it if you want to, without Apples endorsement or warranty. I guess we'll see a way soon, but I'll be running with my Nano. :)

the nano with flash makes the most sense for runners. why promote a hard-drive based player when they've got a flash-based one that's suited perfectly for it?

Yeah I just have a 30GB video for the storage. It is scratched to hell, but I just got it for the color screen and big drive. I have to problems running with it. But I really would LOVE the Nike+ kit.

Yeah, it sucks that it only works with nanos. I run with my iPod photo and have no intention of buying a new iPod anytime soon (I have no need/desire for video in that format). If this is SJ's idea to increase nano sales, it ain't working here.

Awesome. Can someone please figure out how to get this for the 5G yet? Any hackers out there?
