A letter from Apple Camp
I wrote about Apple Camp, the program that Apple runs in its stores to teach kids the finer points of Macs, a few months ago. Now, I don't have any children so there is very little chance that I would end up at Apple Camp (and if I did it would be a little creepy), however, Peter Cohen of Macworld does have children and they wanted to go Apple Camp.Read all about Peter's experience there (the short version: the kids liked it, and the parents bought stuff) and maybe it'll be enough to convince you to sign your kids up. Plus, I am sure you could use a new MacBook Pro.

Me and my 10 yo are off to the Regent Street Apple store next Thursday for some iWeb training (I don't need it but I'm sure that I'll spot something handy!). I might even get a chance to ask why the code it spews out is so nasty! ;-)

It is a ton of fun working with the kids on camp. they are at an age where they don't have the barriers of "this should be reality" last week when we were doing podcasts, one group came up with interviewing rock and roll barn yard animals. and they brought in sounds and pictures of animals. as well as create some of their own.
i also love the fact that this if FREE for everyone to attend. they get shirts, bumper stickers, patches, journals, the works.
and if you have an apple store near you that isn't full, talk to the manager and see if you can get your kids in ASAP.
there is still the Music Making and iWeb sessions that you may be able to sign up for. it's a great way to spend 2 and a half hours.
You know reading this I started hearing the tune to
Hello Mudder - Hello Fadder
Here I am at - Camp Granada
And it's very - entertaining
And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining.
-- Original lyrics by Allen Sherman
If I was 12 or 13 I would be beavering away at creating some realy Crunk Camp Apple words to go with that tune....
funny thing- I went to the podcasting Apple camp today.
It was very fun, the most fun out of my first 5 between this and last years. I was in a gropu w/ 3 grils, and me being a guy.
buut it was cool, cuz I am 13 an they were 12, 15, and 16.
for the podcast we did super screte apple rumors
it was my idea, well really yaknow Steve's
and it was kinda funny cuz we made it kinda geeky
my rumors were iPhone (I used Pete's Q3, I phone piece)
Ialso coveed Lepard tabbed windows
and I talke d about bash version 3 (which I hope gets upgraded)
then I said apple would release an iPod API (which ZI have hopped for)
and my final thing was I would take over Steve in 14 year when he retires @ 65
and the one girl (12) created some really funny stuff on the iPod
the the 2 othergirls were the hosts
Also because these were photocasts, we has a really funny and old photo of Steve
oh yeah, and we did part of it over iChat, for interview
and and we had it (the podcast) spondserd by Microsoft, Destroying the world one piece at a time"
and when it came to mentioning them, we added in a boooo
and we used phtobooth and used the light tube for pics
it was fun!!!!!
We're doing something similar here in Guam called Camp@Apple but this one's for educators. I did one session (just showing OS X and iLife) and was able to make some teachers switch.
