Should Apple rename the iTunes Music Store?
After I finished my last post I got to thinking (dangerous, I know): the iTunes Music Store name is hopelessly out of date. Let's think for a moment of all the things you can download from the iTMS:- Music
- Music Videos
- Television Shows
- Short Films
- PDF's
- Video podcasts
- Audio podcasts
Readers, you are all far more clever than I: should Apple change the name of the iTunes Music Store? If so, what should they change it to? Have at it in the comments, I really want to know what folks think.

One problem with iTunes Media Store that I can see.
It is still called iTunes, referencing music.

Oh, come on, Chris! Are you suggesting that anything designed by Apple would be an istore? (Eyesore?)

Metryq:
Hmm. Hadn't thought of that.
Then again, Apple would NEVER allow an iSORE as an iSTORE, would they?
Heh.

All I care about is seeing them split the music and video libraries in iTunes. It's really annoying that when you're sitting listening to music on your computer with it on shuffle your videos can start playing too.

Brett, I've never read your blog (shocking, I know). It would seem that great minds and all that.

Well, keep in mind a lot of real life music stores sell more than music too so they don't necessarily have to change the name. Some times it's better not to mess with something with good recognition even if it doesn't communicate everything about the brand.

Well I completely agree, but it gets worse than that. Think about iTunes itself: tunes? Well its not just tunes, is it? And all the music, videos, pdfs and everything you store in itunes is stored in your music folder. Time to rethink things, apple..

Brett, it's a pretty obvious idea. I've thought for a long time that it should be called that. You can't call such an obvious idea your own and then accuse people who don't even read your blog of copying it. You seem to have a vendetta against TUAW anyway.

That's just silly. "iTunes Music Store" is the brand name, and it has great brand recognition. Why change it? Tower Records sells videos, did they change their name? Here in Canada, "Sam The Record Man" didn't change his name when his stores branched out. Neither did "CD Plus".
I don't think it will happen.

iMedia Store.
But beware of possible trademark infringement with Quark's now defunct immedia tool.

I always thought they should have put the video sales in Quicktime, and called it the Quicktime Video Store.
I mean, you have to download both apps anyway, so it'd be painless in that respect.
It would also get a lot of free publicity for the Quicktime brand - on CNBC and elsewhere you'd be hearing about TWO stores, and the videos wouldn't get lost in talk about iTunes.

Well it is a bit silly to say that even the "iTunes" part of "iTunes Music Store" should be renamed, I mean it's called that because iTunes is the name of the iLife application itself and it won't replace Quicktime for platform video.

Scott, no big deal, i realize in the mac universe things get repeated over and over, i do like the idea of the iTunes Media store, people are so used to the idea of going there to purchase items that changeing it would be hard to do, but oh well. I like TUAW but wished that more stories were posted in a day.

I think the name "iTunes" could confuse the public if they keep selling all the additional types of media that they do.
Just last week I went to Circuit City, not a single relay, PCB, or voltage regulator in sight!

Umm... Scotty actually copied his own post dated OCT 2005 - 9months. This was a responce to 37signals post regarding the iTunes name.
