Lucky LEM writer finds a $25 iMac at a thrift store
Some people have all the luck. In this case, it's Adam Robert Guha over at LowEndMac who found a $25 Snow iMac at a thrift store. The store (obviously) didn't know much about it, so when he got the machine home he found that it had a 500 MHz PPC CPU, 30GB hard drive and 384 MB of RAM.Adam went for the gold and found that it ran Mac OS X 10.4.7 surprisingly well, and he was able to get online with Safari. So what's a guy to do with a $25 iMac that can live and play in this modern Mac OS X world? Why, give it to his grandparents, of course! He installed Firefox, a couple of games and AOL in the hopes that this 'no cables needed' machine would inspire his grandparents to toss the Performa 630 and start blazing up the interwebs. Not a bad move for such a lucky find. Time for me to go see if my local thrift store mis-priced a PowerMac G5 as a broken air conditioner.

Well, we've seen some cheap macs here. How about this for a way overpriced iMac G3 on my local craigslist... Freaking rediculous. You won't believe your eyes. This joker is on Mac Crack if he thinks he's gonna sell this for the asking price...or I feel sorry for the person who gets suckered into paying it!!!

That's whta's amazing about the OSX macs - installing a newer OS on it actually speeds it up - no matter what version of the imac you have! I have a friend who had the 2G imac - switched to Tiger, runs faster! Pretty freakin' amazing - another thing if you said to a PC user, they think it's just another UFo story of no viruses and no malware - no way is that true :-)

I think this guy beat me though.
I have no affiliation with them and have never bought one, but Compgeeks has G3 iMac's pretty consistently at decent prices. Sometimes they are also on sale.

$50 to $80 for complete systems -- not too shabby.
craigslist regularly has deals similar to this.
July 31 2006 at 1:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFunny coincidence: Saturday morning, I was driving to work for an odd weekend shift, and found an indigo iMac by the side of the road. It's a slot-loading 2000 model, with only a 350mhz processor, no firewire, and no real way to upgrade. The only practical use I've found is getting the Connectix Playstation emulator to run on it.
BTW, has anyone ever tried swapping out the daughtercard on one of these USB-only imacs? It just doesn't feel like a real mac without IEEE1394.
Slow news day? I think yes.
