OSx86 officially spins off InsanelyMac

The OSx86 Project announced a redesign and some new features a while back, and they have proven good on their word. InsanelyMac has been introduced into the wild, and it is indeed good. With a dedicated news team, free blogging, a new theme and building their own CMS to handle it all - these guys must have been consuming a fair amount of caffeine over the last few weeks. They even hint at a few features to come over the next few months, including an integrated RSS reader and a photo gallery. Check out the announcement post in the forums for more details.

But what about the OSx86 Project? Rest assured, it will not go gentle into that good night. In fact, this spinoff was done largely in part so the OSx86 Project could focus on its main purpose: being a beacon of information for running Mac OS X on x86 hardware. So check out the fruits of all the hard work from the OSx86 gang, and stay tuned for even more goodies in the coming months.

Mash is right: i.e. I live in small siberian town, where is no retail Apple store in 300 km radius and the number of the mac-users is above a hundred people; so I shure that I wouldn't ever THINK of buying Mac if there was no OSx86 Project. Now I know how does MacOS X looks like and i'm planning to buy the MacBook. Do you think that this result is "destroying Apple"?

If Apple thought InsanelyMac was a threat to their core business (and IP) they would have sent a takedown notice long ago. Granted, InsanelyMac doesn't host the illegal OS X downloads, but they are 'aiding' IP theft.

w00t Flame war FTW!

I've seen many uses of OSx86 on non genuine Macs go out and but a genuine mac. I don't see OSx86 being a bad thing like many of you mac users..

i have to agree, this is their intellectual property (apple's) and it's theirs to do with as they please and if they don't want this kind of activity then it's not right. i know it's a cool thing to do and it can help people in some miniscule way but seriously, it's a proprietary business and theirs to do what they see fit.

also, i've heard of that book eric's talking about and even though what it talks about is seemingly true, i doubt the answer to combat any of what is presented in the book is by illegal means of stealing things that don't belong to you and have no right to own, operate, or manipulate in any way; and i'm completely sure the author would agree. very premature statement.

Eric, and what the hell do you know? I also see someone who doesn't know shit about intellectual property -- You. The ideas presented by Lawrence are as fallible as any from Marx. Your ideology is based on this? What a fool.

The evidence is there, like #1 has stated -- Apple doesn't want or condone this practice. Nothing more, nothing less. End of story.

Mac Diva...

In the big scheme of things in life, Apple's OS isn't worth getting angry over or calling someone a liar. Yeah, I'm just text on a screen to you, but respect is always appreciated.

And nothing that I said is a lie. Visit our forums - talk with our people. You'll find most of them are just like you.

And as for the legal thing - maybe, maybe not. Apple has a right to keep their OS on their hardware, but other court cases in the past would indicate there's a chance they'd have to open it up.

I'll step back a bit from the arguing and say this: OSX86 project was cobbling together intel/universal versions of software way before the intelMacs hit the stores. You know the first place I visited after I bought my iMac? OSX86. Its the only place you could find news and stuff about the platform. Of course, now universal software is everywhere, but that site performed a service to Mac users and I applaud them for it.

Mac users should welcome them into the fold, instead of blindly alienating them. As Mr Mash said, a large portion of their users are real MAC users anyhow. And clever, intelligent ones at that. I've learned more about the inner workings of OSX over there then on any other website. And I don't even run OSX on a PC...

As a regular reader (and contributor) to both TUAW and OSx86 Project and as a Mac owner (and a "hacker") I'm appalled at the attitude of some of you people here.

Some of us enjoy using OS X on hardware that's not offered by Apple (10" sub-notebooks, tablet PCs), and some of us like using Linux (or even Windows XP) on Apple hardware.

OSx86 Porject is a great asset to the Mac community... Get over it!

Wow! Do you ever say anything that is not a lie, Mash? The bullshit about OSx86 being the reason purchases of Macs have increased was bad enough. But, now, you add to it by falsely claiming there is a legal basis for forcing a company to reveal proprietary business information. There absolutely is not.

I hope you are identified and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

@ Mac Diva

First, I'd say the vast majority of our forum members either have been, are currently, or are planning to be Mac owners. We don't think Mac users are stupid at all - many of us are Mac users. We just think that Apple should open up their OS (which I think, if it ever came to a court battle, they'd be forced to).

Secondly, I use a fake name because I enjoy it. I hope you didn't have the misfortune of being dubbed "Mac Diva" by your parents... :)
