Access Gmail through IMAP in Mail.app
Hawk Wings is at it again, and this time Tim Gaden has tracked down a method for using Gmail with IMAP in Mail.app. It might not be pretty - it's a Perl module that needs a little bit of finagling - but it apparently works. I can't even begin to fake that I know a lick about Perl, so I'm just going to have to point you to the original post to have at it yourself.If any TUAW readers get this to work, feel free to post your thoughts on this most sought-after of (wholly necessary) Gmail features.

#18, I believe Mail.app only retrieves unread mail from the Inbox. You can add filters in Gmail to move certain emails to different folders and I believe Mail.app will ignore them.

Settings>forwarding and POP>
In the drop down menu, select 'archive gmail's copy'
It doesn't mark it as read, as I thought, but it does clear it out of the inbox, and makes it clear when you check Gmail through the web interface.
For the sent mail problem, just create a new filter in gmail (of course, you won't save your outbound messages from the web interface either):
from = yourname@gmail.com
action = delete message
I have the opposite problem from most commenters. I want emails from certain lists to stay on Gmail but not come thru to my Mail.app â while allowing other emails (from more personal correspondents who use Gmail) thru to my Mail.app. How can I keep the bulk from the technical lists to which I subscribe from appearing in my Gmail incoming mailbox on Mail.app?

August 14 2006 at 12:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTim - that doesn't work for sent mail though. If you log into Gmail through the web, the sent mail folder contains all your sent messages unless you manually delete them. That is what I am talking about - not the inbox. Do you know how to not keep copies of sent mail on the Gmail server?
Thanks

Go to Mail.app ---> Prefrences--> Accounts-->Highlight your Gmail Account.
Choose--> Advanced Tab-->Check "Remove copy from server after retrieveing a message" -->then drop down the tab under it, and choose "Right away."
Done

Hello - can someone answer #9?
#12: Because "Mail.app" helps with the search process much better than the word 'mail'; it's too generic. You find much better results when you google 'mail.app' than when you search for the alternative.
So it's simply out of utility; we know it's just 'Mail', but this helps people find what they want a lot easier.
Why do people refer to Mail as Mail.app exactly?
