Seagate hoping to get 120GB drives into the iPod?

If you're as burned out about iPhone rumors as we are, maybe rumors of new storage capacities (finally) coming to the iPod can grab your attention. Engadget found some comments in Business Week from Seagate CEO William Watkins on the state of small-format storage, including whether the Flash memory craze has fazed the company and what's coming down the pipeline in 1.8 inch hard drives. Apparently, the company will have a 120GB 1.8 inch hard drive ready for the December quarter, which would be ripe for the iPod - as it's been stuck at 60GB since Fall 2004.

This is obviously no indication of whether these drives will actually make it into the iPod, but it's great to know they're available, which means there's a chance. Hold your breath at your own risk.

Like horsepower, you can't have too many GBs. I have 150GB of music, so even a 120GB iPod won't hold it all, but I will be able to hold more music and video.

If Apple decides to sell higher quality video and/or lossless AAC on iTunes then this will definitely happen. Although they would probably come out with a separate iPod line, like an "iPod Pro", since the current iPod line is unable to take advantage of this very high quality content.

I'm sure this isn't the right place to be posting, but I saw 'iPhone' and thought of the 'iChat Mobile' name someone came up with... Which got me thinking, following the recent trend isn't Apple's next Phone/iPod release likely to be called a 'MacPod'? Not sure if it has been suggested to death, I apologise if it has. Anyway, seems like the most likely option to me.

80GB drives in the 1.8" form factor have been out for some time. However Apple adopted a slimmer profile for their latest players which may not have been able to fit those models.

The 30GB iPod outsells the 60GB by a large margin. That's to be expected due to the price difference and the mainstream adoption of the product. iTunes is positioned as the central repository and the iPod is a loading and unloading device for temporary storage.

For the technophiles the situation may be different and the iPod is thought as a mirror of the repository. In that case 60GB can be very limiting. For instance, I have a riocar/empeg MP3 player I use in my car which currently has 130GB of storage (two 2.5" drives, 100GB and 30GB). I could easily replace them both with 120GB models, but I think I'm only at just over 80GB of music. That will probably climb to over 100GB when I've had a chance to catch up with ripping the various CDs I've purchased over the past year (yeah, I'm that far behind loading the player unfortunately)

"GREAT idea" Why who would have thought it was a bad idea? It's inevitable anyway, and iPod's have a 60Gb HD since 2005, not 2004. That was the iPod Photo, and that was huge, the HD was probable bigger than the regular one, so that doesn't count in my book.

THat would be a GREAT idea. I have about 75 GB of music, and a bunch of movies, so it would be nice to fnally be able to have the entire library on my iPod and not have to decide what to take off everytime I get a new cd.

I cannot seem to find even 60GB of music to fill up my iPod but the little buggers work great as travel dvd players with the a/v cable. I wonder if Time Machine will backup to an iPod...
