Rob Griffiths' first impressions of Leopard

Rob Griffiths, the man with all the hints, shares his first impressions of Leopard in this article for Macworld. Now, I don't have any real first impressions of my own since I haven't had a chance to play with Leopard (I'm not a developer, so how would I get it?) but I agree with Rob that the most interesting features are the ones we didn't see (I hope).

Rob points out, correctly, that the 'Top Secret' features could just be a marketing ploy, and what we saw were the big features in OS X. Rob goes through the 10 things Jobs presented and organizes them into 'Winners,' 'Important but not obviously cool,' and 'Jury is still out.'

Head on over, and sound off with your own choices in the comments.

I think its pretty obvious. Apple is time-pressed. They aren't on schedule, and hadn't gotten where they hoped to be when WWDC approached.

The Intel shift has taken a lot of effort (and renewing the iPod is harder and harder), and not having enough to ready stuff to show on WWDC pushed the Vista-bashing, the multiple talkers, and the "top-secret" sign. I still personally belive the Finder will be revitalised, and since it is this basic overhaul, much stuff to present depend on it being there. I mean having the new finder in the back.

All functions presented were not very well collected, and we have since, from leaked screens, seen that there was more that should've been presented. Like the help transitions, done with core animation.

Apple are short on time, at least on how they want it to be.

Joe, even if they did that for us we still couldn't blog about it. Darned NDA's.

You're writing for the AOL/Weblogs Inc. empire, they can't find $1400 from the sofa cushions to get you an ADC membership?

is it funny...those without information must make up information to close the gap...Apple and SJ are the willy wonka and the chocolate factory of our times... you will just have to wait until he sends out the golden tickets.

When is the estimated release of Tiger? I saw a beta version available for download around a year ago, in a not so legit place.

First of all I really dont think the 'top secret' line Apple said is crap. for one thing since the introduction of tiger you would expect more than a (IMHO) cheesy interfaced back-up utility (im not doubting its usefulness just how quickly its going to date).

The rest of what was demoed was really, I have to say merely Apples implementations of currently available software. Thats fine as long as they do it better, but Im hoping for some core improvements to the OS. Something ground-breaking. For instance Spotlight is a great technology but I don't think its that well implemented. Its goal was to find files transparently, without effort, to be instantaneous. I think its good, and a big improvement from what search functionality was offered previously, but not truly revolutionary.
Lets hope that Apple has some big guns inder that black cloaked box.

what's so "correct" about him pointing out that the top secret features could be a marketing ploy? it's only his opinion, nothing "correct" about it

"I'm not a developer, so how would I get it?"

If there's a will, there's a way. *wink wink*
