Add SMS support to Address Book for some Sony Ericsson phones

Apple's iSync supports a lot of phones (and we don't have time now to get into why it doesn't support all phones), but that support for some phones can be a little wonky - namely Sony Ericssons (and I just happen to own a W800i, one of the victims). For these phones, iSync supports syncing just fine, but Address Book might not be able to talk to the phone for SMS sending or phone number dialing. Enter this article at mobile.feisar.com which offers a simple workaround for fixing this broken support and enabling Address Book with the true Sony Ericsson super powers it deserves.

As an added bonus, the article even offers a download link for Apple's Property List Editor, which I believe is a tool that can only be had by installing the Developer tools from a Mac OS X installation DVD. This simple little app can come in handy, however, for all sorts of file tinkering hints like this one, as well as many from the likes of macosxhints.com.

Check out the mobile.feisar hint to get Address Book working with your somewhat-supported Sony Ericsson phone, and just in case you're getting any ideas: I have no idea if this simple tip can work for other brands/phones, so proceed at your own risk.

Hi. I got it to work with my W810i from Cingular but the only oddity is that when a call comes in and the Caller ID screen pops up with options like "voicemail" and "answer" they don't work right. You press them, the box disappears but it doesn't actually "push the call to voicemail" or "answer the call" when you press the respective buttons.

Any thoughts anyone? Is that just something that won't work right because it was a hack just to get the phone recognized by Address Book at all?

Thanks! Richard.

I've done everything suggested and despite being able to dial with address book now and the K800 shows up iSync... I still can't use GPRS dialling. It's driving me crazy! Does anyone know of a solution for this?

I'm disgusted that Apple and Sony would allow this shoddiness. I was able to dial using my K700 so what's happened? They must have had some kind of spat. :-(

Scratch my previous post. For some reason, my file type had been changing somewhere in the process.

I replaced the .plist file with a fresh one, added the Z520 string in the appropriate place and now it works great. Thanks!

Try as I might, I can't get my Z520a to be recognized using this method.

I've tried under each Root, with and without the "a" at the end of Z520a.
Anybody have success? I miss this support greatly from my old Z600.

I wonder if such a hack exists, that would bring picture transfer to my (our) Sony Ericsson phones...

May it's an oversight as well?

It should work with the W810i, just don't include the i in the model name, as stated on the page.

So you would enter W810 not W810i

The i is just a marketing thing to denote 'international' and is not really part for the model name.

P.S. iSync 2.3 Phone Plugins for the currently unsupported Sony Ericsson K610, K510, K800, W300, W700, K790, V630, Z550 and Z525 are also available on the site.

I downloaded their software for $1.88 or something for my Z525a and the bluetooth connect and it worked wonderfully. Definitely worth the $1.88 for something that just worked; saved me hours of importing by hand all 200 of my old contacts when I switched phones.

It works on my S710a. However, it didn't do the callerID or SMS until I added it to the 2nd field in

ROOT> 2> ABDeviceModelStrings

NOT!

ROOT> 1> ABDeviceModelStrings

like the article says. This may only be for my model phone or other similar series phones

under devices I put both S710 and S700 just to cover both models incase one didn't work.

I always wondered why iSync worked but Address Book didn't - looks like the reason was as boring as an oversight by the Address Book programming team.

BTW I can confirm that this works perfectly for a Sony Ericsson V800.
