Griffin shipping FireWave

Way back during Macworld SF Griffin announced the FireWave, a $99 Firewire device that brings 5.1 surround sound (with the magic of Dolby Digital™ to your Mac. It looks like, several months later, the FireWave is shipping (and it is still only $99). Your Mac will need to be running OS X 10.3 or 10.4 to take advantage of this, but that is not too much of an imposition for sweet, sweet surround sound.

i got my firewave a few weeks ago. it works perfectly on my mac book pro. i was disapointed to realize that my m-audio sonica theatre usb would no longer work as m-audio wasn't releasing new drivers. but, to tell you the truth the m-audio sonica theatre kinda blowss anyways.

Doesn't the optical port do this?

This is for cheapo non-reciever 5.1 speaker sets so common on "multimedia" pc's so they don't have to invest in optical out.... It has 3 1.5mm jacks, one for front pair, one for back pair, and one for subwoofer. If you already are using optical out and a reciever, this is a step down.

It looks pretty good for $99 but it's impossible to tell how big it is from the image.
P.S. Shouldn't it be "not too much of an imposition"?

Jon,
No, Scott is saying that it's too much to ask to install 10.3 or 10.4 just to use sweet surround sound, so he recommends that you don't buy it.

Why is it an imposition? There are lots of things that need at least 10.3 to run.

I used to want this so I can use a Mac mini as an digital hub with a HDTV and surround sound speakers... but now with Mac minis (and other Macs) having built in optical audio out, this looks much much less desirable, especially at $99. Too little, too late.

Damn my fingers! I left out a 'not,' but now it is correct.

I got this about 3 months ago...Finally released? It works pretty good. Pretty...pretty...pretty good.
Sure I could have spent $300 on digital speakers but I went with $100 on these instead.
