MacUpdate copies Woot clone MacZot

I heard somewhere that there are only something like 30 basic movie plots, and all films are just twists and forks of these original few. Some would say that the same is true for e-business, and they would probably be right. MacUpdate.com has announced a new feature in which a featured piece of software will be heavily discounted and available for only 24 hours. If this concept sounds familiar, it's because it is. The massively successful MacZot got the idea from woot.com, and woot probably found the idea somewhere else.

Because Mac software is a relatively niche market, I see one of two things happening. Either the competition between sites leads to a bidding war to see who can bring in the most dough for the developers, or one of the sites becomes much more popular than the others. Either way, I think the new feature will benefit us end users in the end.

Does this require the software author's permission for these sites to offer these discounts (i.e. does the site make up the price different to the software author, or does the software author basically have "a sale"?)?? If it doesn't require the author's permission, then I can't see this appealing to anyone who makes software for a living. What a way to de-value your product. I mean, who would want to buy your software at full price after seeing it for 40% off?

Bring em on! The more details the more software I'll get. Full price is so overrated. ;)

The constant fleecing of it customers with duplicate licenses for mediocre software will set MacZot on its way to Chpt. 11! I for one welcome the competition and hope MacUpdate kicks MacZots lime green a$$eS! Just go view some of the comments the moderators in the discussion sections make to paying customers. Very immature and shortsided…

It's interesting to note that MacZot (who I intend to remain loyal to) has an "exclusive" Zot today... I wonder if the more competition we see in this space, the more "exclusives" we'll see -- MacUpdate offering discounts on Photoshop and the like, MacZot continuing to champion the independent software developer...
