Bob Dylan iPod ad on Apple.com

Even the great Mr. Dylan is getting in on the iPod promo fun, as a new iPod ad featuring the man himself has been posted on Apple's site. This particular iPod ad seems to break away from the norm, featuring a non-silhouetted Dylan, a plain white background and a dancer + iPod. It's also a promotion for Bob's new album, Modern Days (iTMS link), which we blogged a while back (that mega box set, titled The Collection, is also now available - iTMS link).

In fact, in the same vein of this ad's breakaway theme, it doesn't even look that good. The white is an ugly off-white, and they might as well have made Bob a silhouette - given that the lighting on him is so crummy. The guy may be a little older these days, but he's still an icon, y'know?

Either way, it's nice to see a truly influential cultural figurehead like Bob Dylan receiving the iTunes + iPod love.

Thanks Andrew

7. For what it's worth, that's a pretty cool microphone featured in the ad. It's the Bottle by Blue Microphones

Actually, that's NOT the bottle, that's the BABY bottle (the regular bottle is about twice as long and fat). And if anybody cares, the baby bottle (which I own) is only $600.

isn't it a sillhouette?

I think it is. not black on colour, but black on white.

The iPod is as well "glowing", like in sillhouette-ads. and against the off-white you can see the glowing white of the iPod.

And, if you pay dillan enough to be there, you want people to be able to see him, wouldn't you? just check U2's Vertigo+iTunes or M&M's (sorry, Eminem's)promotion videos. That's why you get to see something more than black.

as a graphic designer I find it nice and artsy, I just don't like how the girl dances. it doesn't fit the music.

cheers!

I'd guess that's how they start to build a silhouette ad. Maybe this one was rushed out and was only half-cooked.

I actually like the colour of the advert. It has a sort of vintage but still new feel to it.

Maybe had you gone with my tip, you would've spelled Bob correctly.

It's not "crummy" lighting, it's a deliberate artistic choice. I quite like the way it looks actually.

It'd be great to be Bob Dylan... you get paid millions just to play a guitar for 5 mins.

I liked this one. The old ones and the colors they were using where getting old. This is a nice change. Also with the dancer moving less than in the other ads, it's got a nice feel to it. Go Bob and Apple! :o)
Although it does remind me of the old GAP ads where they had muscians playing...

@Andy:

What does "modern" recording (such as overproduced Pro Tools crap) have to do with an iPod? Last I checked, you could play whatever music you like on your iPod. So, if Bob (or Byb) wants to play nothing but Leadbelly or Robert Johnson on his iPod, then he can rock out with his @#&! out, and no "modern" recording means or music need be involved.

For what it's worth, that's a pretty cool microphone featured in the ad. It's the Bottle by Blue Microphones ( http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Bottle ) And yes, it's over 4,000 dollars.

That said, I thought the silhouette/poorly lit Bob looked pretty good.
