Filemaker Campus Productivity Kit

FileMaker has just made available, for free, a set of 5 pre-made modules for the college student. The 'College Productivity Kit' consists of modules that allow you to:
  • Manage your contacts
  • Organize your notes
  • Track group work
  • Coordinate events
  • Prioritize To-Do's
Each is a special FileMaker database that is customizable, but only if you purchase a full license of FileMaker (ah, clever marketers they are).

It looks pretty slick, but you need to give FileMaker all sorts of data about yourself before you can download it. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Seems like a lot of overhead, having to load up FileMaker just to manage To-Do lists etc. I tend to favor lightweight, specialized apps for most of those tasks.

Tanner: You need to know what you're talking about before you post as well. If you're looking to play with the big boys, or even the medium boys, get the hell away from FileMaker.

#5, You need to know what you are talking about before you post. Filemaker just released a Beta API to integrate Filemaker with PHP. Filemaker 8.5's new touted feature is web integration (Sort Of) and the big reason they released 8.5 so soon was because of pressure from apple to release a Universal Binary, otherwise they would have waited for a 9.0 release. I am sorry that you are having a hard time with your registration numbers but as a filemaker developer myself I can tell you that filemaker does have a lot of competition but they are bigger and better than ever.
FYI:
If you are interested in filemaker and PHP you will need the server version not just the pro version.

We just upgraded to Filemaker 8.5, and it's been a horrible experience. Based on the quality of the software (compared to 5.5/6) and the technical support (can you believe we invested 5 hours of company time on the phone with filemaker to get all of the serial numbers they gave us to work?), it really looks like Filemaker is end of life, and they know it, so they're just milking out as many "microversions" at $99 a pop as they can.

I imagine that PHP and the whole internet has taken a huge dent out of the Filemaker market, and they have made a clear decision NOT to play in the web database market (their website is in PHP).

I also can't help wonder if as a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple, if Apple has grabbed their last remaining engineers a couple of years ago to build a competitor to Access (since Filemaker is clearly not interested in playing in a business environment).

These 5 modules don't require a full liscense, but if you want to customize it you'll need a full version of FileMaker.
