MSNBC: Mac Pro is the ultimate desktop

MSNBC's Gary Krakow got his journalistic hands on a Mac Pro, and it is safe to say that he was impressed. Why else would he proclaim it the 'ultimate desktop'? Krakow appreciates the use of real metal in the Mac Pro's case (though the case is largely unchanged from the PowerMac G5, metal and all) and the sexy design (if it ain't broke, I suppose) of the case both inside and out.

After going over all the specs of the machine, and mentioning that if you get two optical drives you can either read from one and write to the other directly, or write to both at the same time (which is kinda cool) he falls head over heels for the Intel chips in this monster. Finally, he also does the obligatory, 'Go to Apple.com and configure the most expensive Mac Pro possible,' which comes to about $12,000.

Tony, I'm sorry about your misundertanding. I was making the point that there's a difference between critical pieces and puff pieces, and that some of us would prefer that the latter didn't exist at all. Additionally, I think it's embarrassing and pathetic of people who own and like Apple computers to think and behave as if they were on the company's payroll, cheering the company's every micro-success and boo-hoo-ing over the company's every difficulty.

I doubt anyone misunderstood my post except for you, but I'm delighted to take the time to help you.

"Actually, the top-end cutom configuration tops out at just over $18,000."

I knew someone would do that. Try removing the extra software and other crap that doesn't actually add onto the computer. The specs maxed out alone are 14k, as the article suggests.

Man-O-Man Live - 12 grand wouldn't that be a sweet Mac to call your own and to think it would make Apple's, top of the line dispaly look chep to boot! Hell at price it would have to be the last mac I would ever own or could afford to own! I wonder what the monthly would be? But would it fly - up and over the heads of everyone else on the net - no down time that's for sure!

At last I found a desktop on par with my QuickSilver (when she was new that is) but there both good lookin!

Wishin...

"Krakow appreciates the use of real metal in the Mac Pro's case (though the case is largely unchanged from the PowerMac G5, metal and all)"

The downside to the metal is the weight. I remember not being able to get parking near my local Apple store and having to carry it about 1/2 mile in 100 degree F weather. That was an experience I don't want to repeat.

And j, more mainstream coverage for Apple means more market penetration, which means large Windows-only software developers are more likely to consider porting / developing applications for Mac OS.

"jason, some of us feel that, as we're not on Apple's payroll, we should neither shill for them free of charge nor be delighted when someone else does so. Wild concept, I know."

So, then, you'd prefer to only read articles about Apple from those on Apple's payroll? Only read articles where the author has been paid off by the company he's writing about? Now that *is* a wild concept...

re: "MS"NBC...

Yes, the site is co-owned by Microsoft, but this article isn't ironic at all. Apple and Microsoft have had a working relationship for quite a few years, and I'm sure Microsoft is quite happy that Apple hardware can now run Windows...thus spurring additional sales of Windows.

karan, I think you missed the point, this is a great use of time, as it puts the greatness of apple products in a mainstream and widely read website.

I hope this wasn't supposed to be a review because this guy was simply salivating over the Mac Pro and repeating facts gathered from apple.com. What a complete waste of time, honestly.
