ThinkSecret writes for PC Mag; predicts updated Mac mini
PC Magazine today announced a new bi-weekly editorial column called OpenApple, penned by none other than the infamous ThinkSecret staff.Wait...really? OK. Cool, I think.
According to PC Mag, OpenApple is "designed to help our readers bridge the shrinking gap between the Apple Macintosh and Windows PCs. The staff of ThinkSecret will be sharing news, insights, and analysis in a column running every other week." And in their first column, DePlume and Co. cover Apple's firing of Leopard-downloading employees, the predicted Mac mini update right around the corner, and the slow demise of Apple's keynote dependency.
Not much news in the way of the Mac mini update: ThinkSecret basically says that, um, yes, it will be updated soon in the form of a minor speedbump -- though with little to no fanfare.
Check out the full article for more Information You Already Know. I'm still reeling from their decision to hire the sketchy ThinkSecret staff (what, WIN bloggers not good enough for ya?) -- with ThinkSecret's declining track record and their shady reporting practices, PC Mag seems to be stepping onto thin ice. Hey, it's what Real journalists are supposed to do, right? But at least now they have someone to combat the blabber spewed by the mag's certain other columnists.

SOMEBODY NEEDS TO SET THIS ULANOFF GUY STRAIGHT, ALONG WITH EVERYBODY ELSE WHO'S BASHING PPC. Could somebody from TUAW PLEASE do a writeup on Intel now vs. Intel a few years ago?
"So the PowerPC microprocessor was more than fast enough for Macs until, well, it wasn't. Now the new Intel Macs are the fastest Apple systems ever. Jobs said so and he clearly believes it."
I want to smack people who talk like this. do they not realize how much intel has changed the architecture? What happend to those P4-based notebooks? Oh, right, Intel decided to move their goal from GHz to PERFORMANCE. Do they not find it odd that the new Intel chips have nearly identical clock speeds to the G4's/G5's they replace? I know this is an OLD issue, but there are some people who still don't get it.
Jim Louderback is a first class jerk who resorts to personal insults rather than be a journalist and actually report on issues and facts. Reading his articles is like watching quadraplegics wrestle. He sucks. For serious, I don't know why he still has a job. He's insulting, border-line libelous and just a miserable human being.
And while Think Secret doesn't actually report or come up with scoops, their writing looks like Pulitzer material compared to Louderback's or Dvorak's.
On a different subject, what do they mean by "shrinking gap between the Apple Macintosh and Windows PCs"? Microsoft is catching up?

I think this will be bad, overall, for the Mac platform. Personally, I shudder to think that the ThinkSecret writing staff will be representing the Mac community in a Windows centric magazine. This will give many ill-informed Mac bashers more fuel for their fire.
For the record, ThinkSecret hasn't posted an actual scoop since May of 2005.

An article from this site being critical of another site... well that's just professionalism incarnate. The high road would be to excel at what you do and be noticed for that... rather than dragging someone else's name through the mud. My opinion of this site is now much much more sour. TUAW used to be on my RSS feeds.

For those who read French:

In substance, he ordered the entry Mac Mini with 1gig of ram, but received the "Bumped Specs" Duo 1.66G with 100G platter and a superdrive :-)
Some might think they lacked low-grade mini's, or Apple made a mistake... Who knows ?
Let's all praise apples and cross our fingers :-)
