Griffin iTrips to be legalized in Ireland

Legalize it! That's what a number of Irish iPod owners have been hoping would happen, and it just may come to pass by the end of the year, according to BreakingNews.ie. Up until now, the small FM transmitters by Griffin technology that allow for the wireless broadcast of music stored on an iPod over FM radios have been illegal in Ireland, as they essentially (it had been argued) create a short-range radio transmitter. Soon you will be able to listen to your iPods in the car without that annoying cassette adapter, Ireland!

Here's hoping it works out.

Thanks, Damien!

"...as they essentially (it had been argued) create a short-range radio transmitter."

Not essentially, not an arguement, it's fact. It is EXACTLY a small-power radio transmitter in the FM frequency range.

Andrew:

I saw something recently that the UK is to legalise iTrip-type transmitters as well.

Tommy:

I was in PC World in Dublin last week and they had a 20" iMac on display selling for €1899, alongside the slogan "We won't be beaten on price!" A 20" iMac is €1719 pretty much everywhere else in Dublin.

"I can't wait until Apple stores are legalized in Ireland??!!!"

Here, here! Belfast is in desperate need of one. Currys advise you not to buy Macs and PC World don't like customers being able to boot them up. (Believe me, I did it yesterday. Some member of staff came round and locked out the blackbook while I was drooling over the 20" iMac.)

Sadly up in Northern Ireland I am still breaking the law. We have to take what London dishes out to us up here. Some how I can't see the PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) bursting through my door and prying my iTrip from me.

FM transmitters and Cassette adapters both suck really! Why do all car radios not some with a simple jack connector on the front, is this really so hard?!?!!

Yay! I'll no longer be breaking the law!

And I second that Brendan (#3), bring on the first Irish Apple Store, I'm terrified something's gonna happen to my macbook and there'll be no genius to fix it!

I hate FM transmitters. Not because the quality sucks, but because I'm so tired of hearing what I'm listening to on the radio hijacked by a redneck listening to country twang on his satellite radio as he pulls up next to me. Honestly, don't NPR affiliates have it hard enough as it is without having to compete with every pocket DJ?

Word. Cassette adapters are infinitely better than any radio transmitter i have every used. Don't waste your money on one.

As a sidenote: This goes for Sweden as well. EU is to approve of it, and if it passes, it will be legalized.
