Insanely Mac's iAnnoyance challenge
Those nutty folks at Insanely Mac have announced a challenge to developers called "The iAnnoyance Challenge." Basically, they're giving code jockeys three days to "fix" some of the things about Mac OS X that they find to be irksome. They aren't fooling around, either. The winner of the premiere challenge will get $500US. Speaking of the winner...The "issue" they addressed this time around was the inconsistency of the red, yellow and green buttons that adorn each window in Mac OS X. I certainly hear where they're coming from. For instance, sometimes clicking the red button quits an application (GarageBand and Photo Booth), sometimes it does not (practically everything else). I can tell you that in my day job as a tech support guy, I see countless people who use Windows at home closing application windows with the little red button and assuming they've quit the application (then they can't understand why their computer is so slow, as they've got 11 apps open at one time).
The winning utility by Andy Matuschak and his pal Joe Osborn is called "Stoplight," and it's available here. According to the authors, "Stoplight is a SIMBL plug-in that works via a Preference Pane. It allows you to change the windowing behavior for any and all Cocoa based apps."
Now, before you download, install and experience something very bad, keep in mind: this was written over a single weekend, and should be considered beta (if not alpha) software. None of us at TUAW have tried it. Use a bit of common sense, ok?

what was this article about pmsl
September 06 2006 at 8:27 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHow about making the red button do what people want it to, and add a system pref so people can change what it can do?
Personally, I would like the red button to close the app if there is only one window left.
E.g. If I have one document open in Word, and I close it, I want Word to close. I have no further use for it.
And the green button is possibly the most inconsistent button ever.
If I open a movie from within iTunes, and click the green button, different things happen.
Sometimes the movie resizes. Sometimes it just moves up the screen a bit. WTF?!
And for the Finder it's useless. If I click the green button, the Finder window becomes narrow, forcing a horizontal scroll to see all the icons. Click it again, and it becomes narrow *and* short. Click it again, and the whole window moves to the top right of the desktop.
I understand it is supposed to make the window as big as it needs to be to show whatever is in it. Well, it don't work all the time.
I like the current behavior of the red button, much more intuitive than its Windows counterpart.
PS:
I'm surprised I haven't experienced the mosquito sounds yet, everyone is going on about it, and I haven't seen it once. Perhaps it is because I'm in Canada and the ad is directed at US customers? I guess I'll consider myself lucky.
There is a reason for everything. Things like Disk Utility and Photo Booth have no reason to be open when you close the main window. Safari and Photoshop on the other hand are applications that you are always spawning new windows. Personally, I like the way things work now and I usually hate it when the red dot closes an application. I especially hate the way Windows always closes everything; especially in Firefox.

I can't remember the hundred times when I wanted to maximize the window but the page wasn't loaded yet, so it made my window a small thing in the corner that I had to manually resize (with the only resizeable corner).
Thanks Andy and Joe!
You definitely need to make a product page for this. It's worth it.
I would find it even more annoying if clicking the red button quit the app every time. That means you'd have to relaunch something like Word or Photoshop every time you close a document.
The red button's behavior makes perfect sense to me.
haha
one more who keyed into this post to moan about the mosquito ad. i'm actually closing tuaw as soon as I hear it. WAY TO KEEP YOUR READERS GUYS!
Yes, please, someone kill the mosquito sounds. It is a real iAnnoyance.
September 05 2006 at 5:08 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyhow the hell do you switch off those mosquito sounds???
I've had them go on at work a couple of times - a bit of a giveaway that I'm not working.
I need the sound on my mac to be on. I have saft installed but can't find the right tweak.
STOP THE FFFFING MOSQUITOS!!!!
these sounds are annoying as hell I have had to resort to only looking at TUAW through my RSS reader, i would send an e-mail but i feel it would fall on deaf ears and that the people who would read it do not have the power to do anything. Although I would be surprised if someone hadnt already sent an e-mail regarding this.
