Rapidweaver 3.5 is available

Woo, it's about time! It sure seemed like I've been using the public beta of version 3.5 for quite a long time. For the unfamiliar, Rapidweaver is the WYSIWYG web editor by Realmac Software that does, in fact, make things super easy. Create and maintain a blog (complete with podcast), photo and/or movie galleries, contact page and more with ease. No coding is necessary, but you're welcome to it if that's your thing. Changes in version 3.5 include:
  • Universal
  • A slew of new templates (I've complained bout Rapidweaver's base templates before. Some of the new ones are pretty nice).
  • New UI
  • Permalinks in the blog (Finally!)
  • SFTP supports
There's more, of course, and you can get the full run-down here. This is a free update for registered users. Rapidweaver requires Mac OS 10.3.9 or later and costs $39.95US for a single license.

Nik- Thanks so much! I did need the update, strange Rapidweaver would tell me it was up to date if it really wasn't. Got the update and things actually seem lot faster now too.

Big shout to Jordan for the links to the theme developers. Great links!

The new stock themes are really good ('monsters' especially) but there are dozens of developers like http://2bitoperation.co.uk
and http://www.adhdgraphics.com releasing themes that can be used with RapidWeaver. Add to this a large theme development community and the software is pretty much what iWeb should've been like :)

Noel,

Go to RapidWeaver -> About RapidWeaver and check it's build 175. If not, you'll need to update.

RapidWeaver ROCKS, as do Isaiah & Loghound's Plugins!

There are some nice tutorials over at ScreenCastsOnline http://www.screencastsonline.com . They are very nicely done and there are other shows about different things as well! Highly recommended.

I'm kind of confused... I've been using 3.5 for a while now- with the new templates and everything. I realize there was a beta 3.5 and yes, I threw caution to the wind and installed it, but I after dozens of new sites and pages, I've never had any quirky issues.

Also, if this is simply an official announcement that 3.5 is out of Beta, certainly nothing changed or there would be an update for me to download, correct? Rapidweaver tells me my software is up to date.

AlMeister, I'm surprised to hear that you've had so many problems, even with the beta. I have been using RW (3.2) since February and have had very few problems with the beta since the first version made available. Editing the text links is also no problem for me. Editing the links of certain objects, say an mp3 inserted in a styled text page is indeed a pain... getting the hang of which kind of page to use can be tricky. Styled text pages are good for most purposes but the html pages offer more control... almost total control over content though not the template.

I do agree that there are many options but I think they are logically placed and learnable. Took me a couple days to really get the gist of the whole program and all these options but I wouldn't consider it poor design. I disagree and think that it is very well thought out and has been a real joy to use.

One thing I'd add is that the real power of this app, especially for folks that like to code by hand, comes into play when you start tinkering with templates and/or creating your own. The app's maturity and power are demonstrated in that it offers: 1. an easy to use WYSIWYG interface (for non-coders/designers that just want to build a site) and 2. complete access to the code of content and template for the power users. Compare that to Sandvox and iWeb which cover a similar and overlapping market but really only offer the ease of use. You can pay more to get access in Sandvox via the Pro version.

Count me in as a very satisfied user.

Since this update makes RapidWeaver universal all of the RapidWeaver plugins need to be updated as well. If you've been using some of the plugins from YourHead or LogHound you should definitely download new plugins and upgrade everything together.

YourHead.com and LogHound.com are both offering free updates to their plugins. Go get 'em:

YourHead http://www.yourhead.com
and
Loghound http://www.loghound.com

Finally 3.5 is out. I bought it when it was at version 3.2. I should've tested it more thoroughly I suppose. The 3.5 beta was still full of bugs. The most glaring omission is that there is no undo capability. Images don't always align the way you tell them to. Once you put a link on something you can't see what the link was, let alone edit it. Options are scattered all over the place; some on menus, some on info buttons, some on context menus, some on setup pages, some on site setup pages. There is a fair bit of stuff that is not well thought out on this app. I wish I could be as enthusiastic about this as you, but I can't. The concept is great; it holds a lot of promise, the developers seem to be nice, hard working people, but this program has a ways to go before it becomes a mature app. I suspect it's success caught the developers a little off guard and their user base grew faster than they could update the program. That said, I'll still use it (since I already bought it) but I'm already waiting for the next upgrade.
