Upcoming 10.4.8 to bring "significant" Rosetta enhancements
We have already seen one report covering what's on the menu in an upcoming 10.4.8 update, and this new one should be great news for all the science nerds and Adobe suite users out there who are stuck running PowerPC apps on Intel Macs: AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has seeded a new build, and in addition to testing the components we already knew about, Apple also specified that developers should get rough with Rosetta when testing their scientific apps, as Tiger's PowerPC emulation environment has seen "significant performance enhancements." I personally hope this is true, as Photoshop and After Effects still run like dogs on my MacBook Pro, even with 2GB RAM.Also on the menu is a bit of a quirky detail about two pieces of software that apparently aren't playing well together: Apple warns that running Cisco VPN and Parallels Desktop, at least on their latest 10.4.8 builds, can make Mac OS X fall down and go boom (read: kernel panic). There is no word on whether this will be fixed by the time 10.4.8 is released into the wild.
A final piece of good news from this AI piece is a general ETA for this release, which could land "before the end of the calendar year." Stay tuned.

So...my college requires the Cisco VPN. Am I totally screwed? Where did Apple state that? Does 10.4.8 freak out when Cisco VPN is run on Paralells or just OS X?

You know, I had a 17" powerbook 1.0Ghz machine with 1GB of RAM. I find Photoshop to be a bit faster on my macbook pro. :-D
I am glad I don't know anything else or I'd be pissed.

Generic Student.... I am sure they're talking about the Intel mac version with Parallels.
In my setup, if I want to connect to the VPN with my Parallels, I load it up within Windows anyway. I just need to make sure I don't forget and load up Parallels when running with my Mac version. :-)
Unless it just gets fixed before release.

Tomnibus & Generic Student...
The way that statement reads, it seems to me that they're talking about both pieces of software, and probably not together. That is, running the Cisco VPN client (probably 4.9.00(0050)), or Parallels will result in panics. The wording shown above is definitely ambiguous, but since there IS a Universal Bin version of the Cisco vpn client, it's pretty reasonable to think that most folks would not run Parallels just to run the Cisco vpn client under Windoze..

I've been running Parallels/WinXP Pro, so far without problems. I've also been running the OS X Cisco VPN client without problems, v4.9.00 ( 0050 ). And I've been running the Win XP Cisco VPN client without problems, v4.8.01.0300. I've tried every combination of these applications and haven't had problems with them. I'm pretty lucky, I guess.
I'm running on a 10.4.7 MBP 17" with 2GB RAM.

John,
RTA, this is for 10.4.8 not 10.4.7!

It says this is one of two releases before the new year - ie. that 10.4.8 and 10.4.9 will be out before 2007. Making 10.4.8 a lot earlier than just end of year...

Jason,
The article specfically and unambiguously states (emphasis mine):
However, the company told developers that simultaneously running Cisco VPN client and Parallels Desktop under the latest builds can cause kernel panics.

I have 10.4.8 on Mac Pro and iMac intel. I have also Parallels Desktop and Cisco VPN (4.9.0). It's OK, no kernel panic but I can't see the remote screen (all black) when I want control or observe a another Mac with remote desktop thru VPN.
Excus emy english.
