What makes an iPod game tick
We've already given you our first impressions about buying a game from the iTunes Store, and we even got a video review of Mahjong, but what makes an iPod game an iPod game? That's what Ben Sinclair wanted to know, and he did a little digging to find out. First, he asked Apple if there is any documentation for developers who might want to make their own games. No, there isn't. Second he took a look inside at the files that are in an iPod game and made some interesting discoveries.

Feel free to email me... I'll have to update the site at some point... I had begun to lose all hope :)
If Apple opens up the SDK so that other developers can create games for the iPod, there'll finally be some good games to play on the iPhone whenever it comes out. If I see another crappy J2ME Sudoku clone being sold for $10 on a carrier portal (PLUS carriage!), I'll puke.

I did a lengthy breakdown myself today:

The bad thing about iPod games is each resource (images, audio, etc) is a separate file, which means when the iPod reads it, it's accessing your iPod's hard drive, causing more wear and tear = a shorter lifespan. I was hoping they would make the iPod games just a single binary, similar to their firmware.
Additionally, the images are .PIX, which appear to be raw RGB, but I haven't determined the format exactly yet.
I wouldn't be surprised if the actual iPod game binary is encoded like iTunes purchases are. But if it's not, then once it's hacked (ARM disassembler?), anyone should be able to make an iPod game.
