The best DMG design

Here's a clever idea. I'll admit that I'm superficial enough to think more of a given application if its installer is on a well-designed disk image. AppZapper and Delicious Library immediately come to mind. While I simply admire them from afar, blogger Roustem Karimov is on a mission to find the best one. He has posted snapshots of several images to his blog, and he rates each in terms of appearance, how clearly information is presented and so on. Check it out, it's rather interesting.

Here is one of many examples that use this format.

I am amazed at how few DMGs don't contain a shortcut to the Applications folder. It's by far the easiest solution.

If you don't know what I'm talking about download Adium and check it out.

one1step1:

Yeah, that's what I usually do, but it just seems kinda backwards to tell someone to drag a file to the Applications folder - and then hide the sidebar that contains it.

All you have to do to show the sidebar is hit the oval button in the right hand corner. Then you can simply drag the app to 'Applications' if you still have it in your sidebar.

I vote for the old Marathon CD-ROMs. Long before disk images and embedded images, they used tiled folder icons with custom image icons arranged JUST right, to make it look like a full-window background image. It was really impressive back in the day. Of course, now anyone can make one easily...

"Is this a developer choice or an inherent property of DMGs?"

Wouldn't the whole process be much easier if the DMG window did not automaticaly hide the Finder's sidebar which always has a quick link to the Applications folder? Is this a developer choice or an inherent property of DMGs?

That said, I am always happy when a developer chooses to put a link to the Apps folder in the DMG.
