Rig of the Day: That's some office

The more, the better, right? This office consists of dual 2.0Ghz G5 (probably replaced by now with a Mac Pro), a 15 inch PowerBook, a 1.0 Ghz G4, and three Cinema displays. That's a lot of computing power for one office.

If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. Due to popular demand we have dropped the 'Rig of the Week,' but sound off in the comments if you want it back.

Ah, yes indeed. The dual G5 has been replaced by a new 3.0Ghz MacPro with the ATI X1900 card.

Look at his chair, it's the really expensive chair that has really good ergonomics (I forgot the name)
And is that an Apple trackball attached to the G4?

rig of the day has become "lets line up all my macs on a desk and take a picture."
lame.

Also dont forget the Harman Kardon Soundsticks. I cant tell if they are version I or II. I can see the Sub on top, and one of the satellites next to the smaller ACD.
I just got the Soundsticks II, and couldnt be happier. Also if the guy who's rig is featured is reading this, I suggest putting the Sub on the floor. Unless for some reason u cant. (I work with audio.)

lame ... i'm one of those "poor" mac users that everyone sh!ts on.
gee golly, wish i had 5K for multiple computers but i have to buy a used mac mini and slap a compaq CRT on it to play along.
maybe show a rig of the day for those mac users who make less than 25K a year, like me :(

@wackybit -- is it an Aeron (?) chair, yes sadly that's what I noticed first too.

Agreed, the chair is tops, but there's a much cheaper comfortable solution that I use here http://www.sanwa.co.jp/product/syohin.asp?code=SNC-NET6A&mode=main

What does he actually do with that overbloated set up?
I agree with the comment above: how about a variety of situations not 'look at what I can afford'. I am a teacher and use mine in a pc-dominated school. I am imagining a shot of a classroom with desks and genuinely useful/used apple kit.

To answer your questions, the kind of work that goes on in this office is vision research into normal circuitry of the retina, abnormal changes in retinal disease and possible interventions using vision rescue strategies. It's quite computationally intensive with lots of image analysis work, software development, data analysis, manuscript preparation, grant writing, preparation of seminars and such things related to vision research. The (now) MacPro is my primary workstation, the Powerbook is my daily portable system that I use to take work back and forth from home, the dual G4 is my server that hosts our lab website, a couple of data repositories and my blog.

The chair is a Steelcase Think chair, not a bad chair but certainly inferior to the Steelcase Leap chair -- the Mercedes-Benz of office chairs.
After using the Herman Miller Aeron, Steelcase Leap, Steelcase Think, and numerous other chairs at my jobs I prefer the Leap.
On topic: I hate the fluorescent lights and the desk. The machines are cool, but I prefer more style in these Rig of the Day contests.
I have to ask: Who wants to see what amounts to a home cubicle after spending all day in one?

Damon,
Just to clarify, this office is *not* in my home. It's in our research building.

I think that we would rather see normal setups, not someone's office at their job. Plus, I'd rather see stylish setups, not a bunch of Macs with cables and mess everywhere.

Lewis,
As I live in Japan it was easy for me to get one of these excellent Sanwa Supply SNC-NET6A chairs. As for sources where you are I can't help, except to suggest you try Amazon.co.jp, enter SNC-NET6A, click GO then click on where they ask if you'd like the page in English (on theright)and try and order. Maybe they'll export.
Good luck!

Lewis,
Oops, sorry. I just read down the Amazon page and found they only deliver within Japan.

Thanks Kinnie,
Appreciate you trying and no luck of finding that chair elsewhere unfortunately.
