Nike + iPod: 1 million miles and counting
To say that the Nike + iPod sports kit has been a hit would be something of an understatement. His Steveness told us on Sept. 12th that 450,000 of the kits had been sold in just 90 days, but I wondered if anyone was actually using them. It turns out that lots of folks are, and Nike has just announced that runners have logged over 1 million miles on nikeplus.com, Nike's website that tracks your progress and lets you compete with friends. That's enough miles to circle the globe 40 times, and that is in just 10 weeks.Nike also states that they will be expanding their Nike + iPod offerings, so runners keep those credit cards handy.

I used mine but then the stupid nike shoes aggrevated a knee injury and i now need physiotherapy. so mine is sitting getting dust at the moment, and when/if i can run again i WILL NOT be wearing the nike shoes!

For instance, a machine that will simulate distance and speed. Examples: A machine that will simulate a 2 minute mile; a machine that will simulate a 300 mile run. I hope Nike has a way to weed out this falsified info.
September 21 2006 at 8:30 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyafter a hiatus of many many years, i bought one of these along with the latest nano. I dont like the nike shoes so I have done what many others have and just stuck the sensor in a key pouch that clips to my laces. At first i thought the nike+ipod thing was silly, but now that i have used it for 5 workouts or so, i really like it. The motivation for me is almost like playing a game. Every workout you 'collect' more miles/calories burned/runs/whatever and you cant wait to get home to upload them and see what your totals are. Since i just started running again, i have had to take it slow to avoid injury, so i havent actually been running as much as i _wanted_ to. That's right, i actually want to go out and run now.

I used lifehacker's idea of cutting a hole in the tongue of my new balance with a razor blade, held the shoe pebble in with a safety pin and calibrated it to accuracy within a hundredth of a mile. Now I have been running more than ever. The idea that I can log my miles without having to go back and measure the distance frees me to run wherever I please.
Sometimes, though, I doubt the mileage total. I'm not sure whether it is the device, the hack, or my own subjectivity.
Re:1
I do very much hope the cycling version will not be tighten up to any Nike product!!!!!! Nothing against Nike, but I want a freedom of choice and that is kind of Microsoft style of doing business what Apple is doing now with Nike+iPod; and that is not the only instance of that behaviour - I have to get a new armband for my new Nano 2nd Gen; the one for Nano 1st Gen does not fit properly!!!!!!!!!! That is ridiculous!
I've had the kit for about 2 months now and it's been a great motivator for me. Steath43 was doing some cynical math but anyone that has purchased (and is using) this kit is using the nikeplus.com site. While you CAN keep your running totals on the ipod, it's not as friendly as the nike website so i suspect anyone that is using it is also using the website.
September 20 2006 at 11:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, I use mine all the time. I'm exercising much more regularly now that I have it. The ability to set goals on the website and track my progress...as well as try to set personal bests for distance, time, rate, etc...are great motivational factors. I wasn't sure how much I would use it, but for $29 it was worth a shot. (I use a $9 "key pouch" that attaches to my shoelaces to hold the transmitter thingy. Works great.)
I highly recommend the product...even if used just for walking at lunch or in the evenings. You don't have to be a runner to get great benefit from it...and it's actually fun.
Add to that the ability to have contests with your friends via the website, and as one blogger has already pointed out it makes it like a videogame.
I don't think it was a stupid thought, Edward. Lots of people buy fitness gear with the hopes of using it but it just sits and collects dust. Trust me, I'm a fat guy so I know of what I speak. ;)

Assuming the average person is syncing once a week, thats 56000 people a week.
Its very hard to tell based on the numbers being provided how they are being used
My guess:
450,000 SOLD
100,000 never used
100,000 used only once and not synced
150,000 used only once and synced once
100,000 being used regularly(at least once a week)
Ah, no, wait. I was wrong. They had 8000 people logging data in one day. They didn't actually say how many of the 450,000 people logged data to the site in total.
