Widget Watch: Ma.gnolia Ma.rker

Who says del.icio.us should have all the fun in the social bookmarking arena? Ma.gnolia is one of many competitors which takes a decidedly more human approach to the social aspect of online bookmarking, offering discussion forums, themed groups, user spotlights and more. While we've blogged plenty of ways to leverage del.icio.us, it's nice to see more more tools for other services like this widget for Ma.gnolia.

The Ma.gnolia Ma.rker allows you to easily post links, customizing all the standard elements like descriptions and tags, along with rating the link before you send it off. The one catch the author didn't specify is which browsers this widget can work with; I don't personally have a Ma.gnolia account so I can't test it, but if any of you readers take it for a spin, let us know if it works with anything other than Safari.

I just noticed this: Try highlighting some text on the page before bringing up the dashboard with this widget. The highlighted text will automatically be pasted into the Description field. Neat!

Ma.rker will also grab the URL from Camino. Patrick we'll look into making it a bit smarter about checking the active browser for an URL rather than giving preference to Safari. Thanks for the writeup David.

I've been lucky enough to be able to use a prerelease version of Ma.gnolia Ma.rker for the past few weeks and I can tell you that it's a great little widget. I've recently switched from del.icio.us to Ma.gnolia as my primary bookmarking system thanks to this widget and the update to the Social Bookmarks Quicksilver plugin, which now supports Ma.gnolia.

The handy rating and public/private switch on this widget are really nice. As far as browser support goes, it works with Safari and Firefox from what I can tell. It may work with other browsers, but I haven't tested it yet.

And just so you know, if you have both Safari and Firefox open, Safari's current URL overrides Firefox, so the widget isn't smart enough to use your currently active browser. That would be a nice feature though.
