The case of the missing shows in the iTunes Store
If you think that Mac geeks are a a vocal group, you haven't met any SciFi geeks (a group of which I easily fall into). This Friday was the highly anticipated season premiere of Battlestar Galactica's 3rd season. As you know, BSG is available on the iTunes Store, however, 3 days after the premier there is no sign of the 3rd season opener on iTunes. This isn't the first we have heard of major lag time between a show airing on TV and then becoming available on the iTunes Store. Apple, if you want people to buy these shows you really need to post them in a timely fashion (a few hours after the show is on TV would be great, immediately after the airing would be even better though harder to do thanks to time zones).
Anyone else noticing that their favorite shows are taking awhile to become available for download?
Oh, and the BSG episode in question was awesome.
Thanks, Quix.

October 11 2006 at 4:51 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, there is one flaw in what she (sally schoenbum at sci-fi) said over the phone. The third episode of "Heroes" is already available in iTunes, and it just aired last night. That's a pretty standard turnaround.
The pilot episode of "Heroes" was removed from iTunes, but that is for separate legal reasons. (The maker of a garbage disposal sued them for making their product look unsafe, and they aren't allowed to show the pilot again until changes are made or the court case is settled.)
That doesn't mean he's lying, of course. It's entirely possible that the fault lies with a technical problem at Apple, or somewhere else in the chain of command.

OK. I have done a little digging and Homework. Here is what I suggest...
...
I have found the person responsible for the Digital Media for NBC. Her info is...
"BETH COMSTOCK
President, Digital Media and Market Development, NBC Universal
Beth Comstock was named president of Digital Media and Market Development in December 2005. ... (etc...)
The phone number for NBC in California is 818-777-1000. Before you spin up your mouth's FTL drive, read the rest of this...
ok, i took this advice. so here's some updates for all on what i found out by calling these numbers. i'm posting this on all related bsg/itunes/whereDafrakis03? threads
first, beth comstock is at 30Rock nbc offices in nyc, not at the 818 burbank california number. the correct number to her is (212) 664-4444, and ask for beth comstock's office.
i spoke directly to annette, who says she is beth's assistant. i said, in very polite yet concerned tones, what liquidthinking suggested we say, almost verbatim. she told me tho' beth is in charge of digital media, nbc/universal and that dept. is not resposible for uploading bsg to apple's itunes. sci-fi is.
she gave me two people to call at sci-fi channel, also in nyc --
212-664-4238 - dana ortiz - sci-fi's head brand marketing
212-664-3467 - sally schoenbum - head of pr for sci-fi
i called dana, got a voice mail, left a message.
i called sally, got her live and in person.
again, gave the near-verbatim spiel from liquidthinking, and let her know this is a "hot button issue" on the blogs and digg.com, etc. she said neither her nor dana are really responsible for uploading to apple, but she was indeed concerned the show wasn't up on itunes after 4+ days and was going to talk with dana and call me back (i gave her my phone and name). that was 3 hours ago. i'll give her a little bit more and then call her again. it was a pleasant conversation.
further on this -- i called sallie schoenbum, sci-fi's head of pr, back. she directed me to the post by the admin on the front of the page. unfortunately, admin locked that post, which i think is just a wee bit not nice. we could have consolidated all the threads there to ask further questions.
just to let you know, according to sally schoenbum at sci-fi, they *did* upload the source in plenty of time to apple's itunes. apparently, apple has been having great difficulty posting not only bsg, but the latest episode of nbc/universal's 'heroes,' and other shows. so it seems to rest with apple now.
one user got a support e-mail back from a "grace" in customer service at apple itunes store, saying they were still waiting on the content. so somone is frakkin' fibbin' here - apple or sci-fi. my money is on apple.
ladies & gentlemen, point laser canons towards cupertino...
Ive had the same issues with Atlantis and SG1 the two episodes before the season finale (break) werent up for almost a month and a half.

(Possible spoilers follow)
I think the moral ambiguity you speak of is EXACTLY what Ron Moore et. al. are trying to accomplish. They aren't drawing a parallel to Iraq or Afghanistan or Viet Nam, or Vichy France but they're using the concepts from these conflicts to ask hard questions about war, morality, occupation, life, and death.
Nobody thinks "I'm evil" (except perhaps Tigh, who gave a speech to that effect in Ep2. I half expected him to say, "Behold, I am death, destroyer of worlds!")
Anyway, people who commit unspeakable evil usually think, "I'm doing this evil thing to promote the greater good." It's interesting to put yourself in that moral quandary. Would you blow yourself up to kill a bunch of evil collaborators? What if they killed your family and you had nothing to live for? What if you believed God wanted you to do it? And they're very careful not to tell you how to think. They just throw it out there - and you have to make up your own mind. It's basically the opposite of the condescending, comfortable black/white moralizing that is so characteristic of Star Trek. To me, that's really, really cool!
I am a BIG fan of hard sci-fi. But outside of novels, it basically doesn't exist. For soft Scifi on the small screen, BSG is the very best sci-fi I have ever seen. So far, Season 3 is the best of the best. It's TV that makes me think. That's something!
The first episode of season three was available through Comcast On Demand the night it aired on Sci-Fi.

October 10 2006 at 5:59 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi managed to grab a look at episode 1 and have to agree it is mightly awesome.
can't wait to watch precipice, the scriptwriting in this show puts all others to shame.
Way to go BSG
(p.s. I'm in the UK and try my very hardest to keep up to date, it isn't easy, me wanna US Visa)
A button for the new season of Battlestar Galactica is showing up on the home page of the iTunes Store, but when I click on it, it gives this error message: "Your request could not be completed. The item you've requested is not currently available in the US store." (I have a U.S.-based account.)
I take this to mean that they've JUST added the link, and the show should be available soon.
FYI, I've received the latest podcast (Ronald Moore's commentary on the season 3 premiere) via iTunes a few days ago (Friday). If you haven't received it, double check to make sure your feed is current. Mine shows up in iTunes as "Battlestar Galactica Podcast." (Last season it showed up as "Sci Fi Network" or something like that -- I have no idea why it changed.)
